Printing Industry Forecast: Top Trends in 2023

At LexJet, we’re always ahead of the game, anticipating the latest trends and technologies in the ever-evolving digital printing industry. This year, our experienced team has spotted some exciting changes on the horizon and distilled them into five must-watch trends for 2023. Handpicked by Timothy Mitchell, Senior Product Development Director at S-One, these trends will take your business to new heights. Get ready to navigate the market with confidence and exceed customer demand like never before.

Wall Covering

Commercial wall covering is a hot trend that will be around for quite some time. Transforming an environment’s ambiance with wall covering allows for unique creativity and vision.  A simple wall that gets overlooked daily can become a marketing opportunity with the right head-turning graphic that commands attention. According to Mitchell, “Single panel 3.2-meter wall covering like JM Covertex will change the industry completely for commercial applications. It’s faster, cleaner, and smarter than printing panels.” With the constant advancements and ease of use, you don’t have to be a pro to install wall covering, making it an easy choice that achieves maximum results.

Direct to Film

DTF (Direct to Film) is shaking up the apparel and transfer world. With this transfer type, digital inks and a powder adhesive coating are used to print a design, which will then require the design to cure before transferring it onto a garment with a heat press. “DTF will grow and continue to disrupt the apparel markets. DTG will shrink (no pun intended) as DTF keeps expanding. Ease of use and low cost of entry are just too attractive.” With DTF, you can retain the finest details without any lines with a full array of colors for more vibrant designs.

Trade Shows

With trade shows back in full swing, there’s a greater demand for unique display signage that can grab a crowd’s attention. Timothy predicts that large-format textile printing with dye sublimation will continue to grow. “All big industry shows rely on big displays and big displays are most often done with SEG fabric and dye sublimation.” Your printing business can take advantage of this opportunity by offering the special signage companies need for trade shows. Timothy also feels that “Direct print with inline fixation is now for real, and it works, and it’s easy. This is the best way to print direct, especially with sublimation paper being in short supply or going up in cost.”

Window Film

When it comes to the world of digital window graphics, the benefits are abundant and go far beyond simply adding ambiance and style to a space. Today’s state-of-the-art window film technology offers many advantages, from enhancing privacy to providing UV protection and adding valuable real estate for expanding your customer’s brand. And, with the window market projected to continue its upward trajectory, optically clear films like LINTEC are poised to lead the charge, offering versatile, scratch-resistant, and cost-effective window film solutions. Best of all, with a little bit of planning and preparation, anyone can successfully install these window films and start reaping their numerous benefits.

UV Technology

UV technology is expanding quickly and taking a prominent seat in the printing market. Understanding the various printer technology and inks used can save you a lot of headaches and money down the road. UV prints directly onto your chosen substrate, so there are limitless possibilities for customized products you can offer your customers and tap into an uncrowded market that can bring you great business profit. Like anything else worth the investment, a little research and planning can open the door to new opportunities to stay ahead of the competition that only this type of technology can offer.

You Asked, We Listened. What You Really Want to Know About LINTEC Window Films.

Window films are a high-quality, beneficial, simple, yet dramatic way to transform any space. As the digital printing industry becomes more environmentally conscious, the LINTEC eco-friendly window films offer solutions never before seen in our industry.

So, you’re considering adding a WOW factor to a space, but you aren’t sure which product to try or which one is the best solution for your needs. At LexJet, we know you have many questions, so we’ve answered 10 of the most popular consumer questions about window films to help guide your decision.

If the film is used for privacy, does light still come through?

One of the great features of the LINTEC recycled window films is that they are optically clear and offer maximum clarity. These window films reduce the transparency of glass but still allow sunlight, creating a natural and comfortable environment. They can be designed to look any way you like, so you can apply a frosting effect to your graphic to create the level of privacy you desire.

Will the film fade over time if exposed to sunlight?

Any fading depends on the environment. If you apply the film where there will be constant sunlight in a generally hot climate, then the film will see a lot more UV light than other locations, which will start to fade over time. For these locations, you may want to consider a removable film that you can change when you need to refresh the graphics.

Is the removable film easy to remove if I want a change the design?

The films are removable, and how easily may depend on the glass the film was adhered to. You should not add the film to unstable or old glass that is pitted, as this can make removal difficult.

How long do the films last?

When installed under the recommended conditions, the window graphics will be incredibly durable and long-lasting. These eco-friendly films made using recycled materials have the same quality and longevity as traditional films. With UV blocking, the films have a five-year warranty mounted indoors, in virtually any condition, while standard films have a warranty of one year, depending on the environment.

Can I add the film to any glass?

For the best long-lasting results, it is recommended that the films be installed on clean, stable glass that is not too old and cracked or pitted and that you follow the installation guidelines.

Which window film should I buy?

There are several factors to consider when choosing a window film. Are you looking for a short-term (up to one year) or long-term (up to five years) solution? How large of a window or space are you planning to cover? Will you be installing the window film yourself or hiring professional installers? Whatever you choose, we offer various solutions ideal for displays in high-traffic areas that may be susceptible to physical contact. To determine the best film for your needs, reach out to us at 800-4-LexJet and we’ll work with you to find the right solution.

Installation is easy, but just how easy depends on your comfort level. If you’re a DIYer, most projects will be pretty simple when planned accordingly. With large surfaces, it is recommended that you hire professional installers for an easier installation process. Permanent adhesives can be removed by qualified installers.

Here are some supplies LINTEC recommends for installation:

  • Application solution (in spray container, properly mixed)
  • Squeegee
  • Edge guide tool
  • Trimming knife
  • Pressure-sensitive tape
  • Razor scraper
  • Paper towel (a lint-free towel is best)

Can the window films get scratched?

The films are great for high-traffic areas and are scratch-resistant. They are an excellent solution for high-traffic office spaces, schools, or any location that needs durable graphics.

How are the LINTEC films eco-friendly?

These high-quality films are optically clear, made from 80% recycled PET materials, manufactured with 40% less energy, and offer excellent clarity, as well as dimensional stability. The products offer the same crystal clarity as traditional PET films made from new plastics, but with the bonus of being environmentally conscious.

What sizes do you have available?

We currently offer the following films in multiple sizes:

LINTEC 2 Mil Recycled Removable Window Film – 54 in. x 150 ft.

For Flexibility, Privacy & Design, Squid Delivers for this Texas Printer

Phillip Cole, sales manager at Thomas Graphics Inc. in Austin, Tex., is always looking for unique products to offer his clients. Once he heard about Squid Textiles, a new self-adhesive window fabric that offers privacy, reduced heat and glare from the sun, and the opportunity to create customized graphics, Cole knew it would be a great addition to his product line.

In October, while attending Printing United, Cole stopped by the S-One booth because the Squid demonstration caught his eye. “LexJet had some on display and the print really leaped out at me,” he says. “It looked so unique, which is the type of product I like to lead with to differentiate my company from my competitors.”

With such a unique product, Cole understands that a variety of applications is important. “I went to the website to show some examples of what can be done. One striking image was of the moon. It’s a die-cut circle that looks dimensional, but it’s not,” he says. “Then I showed the client an image of a tree on an office window. I knew it would get the client’s attention, and it did.”

Working closely with his client, they came up with three different graphics to use on two different Squid colors. For a layered tri-colored graphic that is meant to provide some privacy for a conference room, they chose Bone. “You can see parts of the chairs below the graphic, (pictured at top) but you can’t see the table. The amount of privacy is perfect,” Cole says.

The client wanted something simple for two of the half walls that still allows some visibility but doesn’t feel enclosed. Using an EFI printer, they chose to use Rock and use white ink to create the images of the Texas capitol building for one hallway and their logo for another. “In the pictures, you can still see people in the background, but you can also tell how much privacy the product provides,” Cole says.

Privacy wasn’t the only feature that caught Cole’s attention. “I like the unique ability to print on it because that’s what we do, and it opens up lots of ideas on how it can be used,” he says. “There’s more than just privacy to this product, the design component is important.”

After the installation was complete, the client mentioned to Cole how well the Rock blended with the flooring. “It’s nice to have the flexibility of various colors to blend with the environment of the application,” he says. “It’s nice to have a solid color as a base for consistency. A different printer or technology might hit a different color.”

This project was Cole’s first experience with Squid, and the install went relatively smoothly. “It’s easy to install, but we did have a little issue with small, intricate cuts because it is a fabric,” he says. “We found a way to make it work and the client was happy with the results.”

Squid Textiles originated in Europe and was introduced to the U.S. market at Printing United last year, exclusively through LexJet. Getting in on the ground floor is exciting to Cole and his team and he knows the addition of Squid will lead to new business as well as additional business from current clients. “I take a lot of pride in the fact that this is one of the first Squid installs in the country,” he says. “This product helped us get our foot in the door for other work.”
