When choosing the best product for your project, how do you know which is the right material for the job? When considering window films, should you choose polyester instead of vinyl material? Let’s explore the main differences to learn which is right for you.
While both PET and vinyl are used in window films, each have their benefits, so understanding what sets them apart is important in making the right decision. For starters, PET (polyethylene terephthalate) is a type of polyester film, whereas vinyl refers to polyvinyl chloride (PVC).
Here are some key differences to consider when planning your next window project:
-
Clarity- Having truly optically clear window film is important for optimal results. PET (polyester) is optically clear. While Cast PVC (Vinyl) is also clear, and much clearer than calendared vinyl, it can’t really compare to PET.
-
Stability- When used indoors, PET is more stable on glass, but outdoors, vinyl tends to be more durable. PET does offer less shrinkage in the heat while PVC, particularly calendered PVC, may shrink. PVC can also crack in the cold, PET does not. One solution for PET users is to install the window film on the inside of the window.
-
Removability (or Permanence)- Swapping out signage easily is essential, especially for retail businesses. Under normal conditions and when performed properly, PET removes cleanly from the glass in one sheet. The advice is to pull the film off the glass at the lowest possible angle. PVC, on the other hand, comes off in strips, often making it more difficult to uninstall and can be time-consuming and costly.
-
Environmental Concerns- PET is considered more environmentally friendly than PVC. PVC by its very name is polyvinylchloride, resulting in this product ending up in a landfill releasing hydrochloric acid over time. Most designers and architects require no PVC, as PET is easier to recycle and by using recycled materials, they can get LEED credits for buildings. -
Price- Polyester typically costs more than basic vinyl but is less expensive than premium vinyl options.
