For LexJet, ISA Sign Expo Truly Was a Really Big Show

We’ve heard a lot of big numbers being thrown around about this year’s ISA International Sign Expo. This year’s attendance topped 20,044, which is the largest crowd for ISA in 10 years, and the largest that the Orlando show has ever seen.

LexJet was one of 600 exhibitors in the 200,000-square-foot trade show floor. Also, our 50-foot-by-24-foot carnival themed wall graphic, complete with Ferris wheel and roller coaster printed on LexJet Simple Flo Wrap Vinyl, was the largest mural ever displayed inside the ISA show.

Prints that Win: Photography in the Twilight Zone

Michael Zerivitz, DDS is a Deltona, Fla.-based dentist who’s had a lifelong fascination with photography. Though his photography is a sideline to his successful practice, Zerivitz has been practicing photography since high school.

Award winning photographyThat continual practice, plus the help of his professional photographer friends in the Orlando area, helped make Dr. Zerivitz a distinguished award-winning photographer.

“I set photography aside after college while I raised a family and started a practice. Then I went to back to school at Daytona State College, which has a great photography program, and started getting together with mentors in the Orlando area,” says Zerivitz. “I have some really good professional photographer friends who have a group called the Portrait Artists Group and I was fortunate enough to be invited to join them. I have to give credit to my friends and mentors in the Orlando area who have helped me become a better photographer.”

Zerivitz was recently honored with a Distinguished Award in the Architecture category and a LexJet Sunset Award at the recent Florida Professional Photographers convention for his work entitled Twilight Zone.

Zerivitz captured the image while touring the Israeli Supreme Court building. A certain passageway with windows lining the corridor leading to an interior courtyard caught his fancy so he stopped and took a frame. Later, the image caught his eye again.

Though it’s not the type of shot he usually takes or enters in competition, he did some minor adjustments to it in Photoshop and Nik Software to make it more high key and had the image printed by photographer Tim Kelly.

“We mounted it and matted the print, and then hand-cut the deckling along the edges. There was a little exit sign that was visible in the corner we took out, but other than that it’s a straight shot,” says Zerivitz. “I call it the Twilight Zone because it reminds me of the opening of the old TV show. I think the judges liked the monochromatic image with tones that are all in similar ranges.”

Despite his busy schedule fixing and fine-tuning teeth, Zerivitz is pursuing Certified Professional Photographer and Master Photographer degrees and had one of his images accepted into the PPA Loan Collection this year. Last year Zerivitz was among the Top 10 Florida Professional Photographers and was Photographer of the Year in his local guild.

Printing the Big Picture for Conferences and Trade Shows

Printing wall graphics for conferencesAt 11th Hour Printing Solutions in Orlando, Fla., they don’t simply print and apply. Consultation and bringing their expertise in effective trade show and conference graphic programs to the forefront is their forte.

In this recent conference project pictured here for a Marriot in the Orlando area, 11th Hour meticulously mapped out the best sites, and the best application methods, for the common area directional graphics. Mark Jacques, director of print services for 11th Hour, says they often use an iPad 2 as a tool during the process.

“We’ll walk a client through the space with all the images of their graphics housed on the iPad. Then, we’ll pull up the image of the graphic that goes in a certain space to make sure the directional works for them in that location. It’s been an excellent tool for our work,” says Jacques.

We send the client the full map, and then we have a conference call to discuss what parts of the property they’re using and what they’re traffic flow is going to be. We recommend where to put directionals and graphics. In this instance the client did all the design work and we provided the measurements for each location where everything needed to go.”

In other words, 11th Hour takes a big picture view of each project to ensure both effective branding and direction. When possible, 11th hour prefers to apply graphics to walls, columns and entryways, as opposed to using banner stands and sign easels. Jacques says, “The easiest sell is that it’s not obstructing the traffic flow; banner stands and easels with signs are obstructions. This gives the client the opportunity to brand the entire space and make it look like it’s theirs.”

“We’ve done an extensive amount of work and testing at this property. Everything we’re applying the graphics to is a wood panel painted with an oil-based paint and we’ve never had any damage to the surface,” says Jacques.

Plan for PPA: Pro Photo Tour Starts in August

Printing marketing pieces with wide format inkjet printers in-houseProfessional Photographers of America (PPA) has just scheduled a late-summer tour for professional photographers geared toward improving the digital workflow, finding a competitive niche, running a better business, managing post-capture for the highest profitability, and more.

The eight-city tour of daylong workshops starts in Atlanta on August 15 with other events planned for Houston, Philadelphia, Cincinnati, Orlando, Kansas City, San Francisco and Raleigh. Each of these PPA Tour events is focused on helping photographers make more money, while finding new ways to stand out in a highly competitive industry.

“The market for educational products targeted to photographers has exploded in the last couple of years with all kinds of inspirational and artistic programming. However, there are few options for learning how to run a sound business from A to Z,” explains Dawn Robb, PPA’s director of education. “The PPA Tour is set up to walk photographers through a day in the life of a successful photography studio, from finding and targeting the right customers, to taking a great photo and managing the post-capture process for highest profitability. We’ll bring it all together at the end of the day with the thing all photographers want most: strategies to sell more products.”

The PPA Tour is designed to help photographers who are just getting into the business and those who could use the classes as a business booster. Workshops will be taught by industry leaders, and the speakers will vary from city to city. Instructors include Bry Cox, Tony Corbell, Kay Eskridge, Lori Nordstrom and others. “We’re highlighting photographers who have created profitable business models and are ready to lend their expertise to others,” adds Robb.

Robb also points out that the PPA Tour 2011 is a great opportunity for photographers to network and learn from each other. “Others have gone through the same challenges you are going through, and now’s your chance to capitalize on their solutions.”

Whether attendees choose between a full day of education for $79 (9 a.m. to 10 p.m.) or the evening program on sales and service for $39 (5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.), they will all have access to a mini trade show. At the trade show, they can browse for products and meet with key industry partners.
