ONYX 18 Wide-format RIP Software Available from LexJet

Last month at FESPA, Onyx Graphics, Inc. announced the launch of ONYX 18, the newest version of the company’s wide-format software. The new version, available Monday, June 18, introduces new technology for color accuracy and consistency and is the first solution compatible with iccMAX, the new standard recommended by the ICC for all wide-format applications, including textile and soft signage.

ONYX 18 software will be available for the entire suite of ONYX solutions, including Thrive, ProductionHouse, PosterShop and RIPCenter.

Some of the highlights of ONYX 18 software include:

  • ONYX Color – is an industry-leading color engine. There are core enhancements for improved black ink combinations for increased shadow detail, texture and definition, with special application benefits for textile and soft signage
  • ColorCheck – a new approach to process control that enables Print Service Providers to guarantee color accuracy and output consistency across devices
  • iccMAX – is a new standard recommended by the ICC for all wide-format applications, including soft signage and textile
  • PosterColor 2.0 – first introduced to the industry by Onyx Graphics, it uses next-generation smart rendering intent to boost solid color saturation for added “pop” across all images
  • AccuBoost – is new for ONYX 18. It is an iterative profiling technique for pinpoint accuracy of ICC profiles

Simple, Successful Wall Graphics Application

Repositionable and removable wall murals and graphicsIt was a simple application, but it’s not always as simple as it first seems. Capella University needed a nice-looking “Welcome” sign prominently placed at a recent event. The solution was a wall graphic applied on an overhanging curved wall in the registration area.

The trick, as it often is in these cases, was finding a material that was easy to work with, would stick to the wallpaper and not destroy the wallpaper once it was removed. So Bill Harriman, owner of Custom Signs & Graphix in Brooksville, Fla., decided that LexJet’s new Simple WallCal (6 Mil) would hit the spot. “I decided to use WallCal after consulting with my LexJet sales rep, Tom Hauenstein. He had personal experience with the material and was able to assure me it would work as advertised. It is very hard to read and believe all that you see online, but after talking to Tom I felt this would meet my high expectations,” says Harriman.

“It was applied to a hotel’s wallpaper and I haven’t heard of any problems removing the graphic since it was only up for about a week; it performed as advertised. I’m sure I would have heard about it if it didn’t work properly when they removed it,” Harriman adds. “I installed it myself because you often run into weaknesses in the wallpaper. Sure enough, some of the wallpaper was curling a bit, but we still didn’t have a problem installing it.”

The graphic is 20″ tall by 22 feet long and Harriman broke it into two 11-foot long panels for ease of installation. Simple WallCal’s microsphere adhesive allows the material to be repositioned frequently during installation and makes it easy to remove, without damaging the surface to which it’s applied, for up to a year.

“The low-tack materials, especially for all the trade shows and conferences we do, are pretty cool. What makes this an interesting project, for me anyway, is not so much the content – beautiful, multi-color graphics – but that it was applied directly to a multi-million dollar hotel’s wallpaper and performed well,” says Harriman. “The material also has very good image quality. I’m using an Onyx RIP that helps keep everything consistent from water-based to solvent printing.”

Deck the Walls and LexJet Team up for Extreme Home Makeover Wall Mural

Printing wall murals for Extreme Makeover: Home EditionThe last time we talked to Chris Knight, owner of Deck the Walls in Joplin, Mo., he was doing his part to help replace priceless keepsake photos residents of the town lost during the horrific day an EF5 multiple-vortex tornado brought vast destruction to Joplin this past May.

Knight got another chance to donate to the cause when Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (EM:HE) came to town to build seven homes for seven families. Knight volunteered on the website to help if any printing was needed for the project.

However, it wasn’t the website inquiry that attracted EM:HE to his print shop. EM:HE project manager Bill Crowley happened by Deck the Walls and noticed the sign on the shop’s truck. So, he walked in and discussed a project at one of the homes that seemed to be right up Deck the Wall’s alley, a Denver Broncos wall mural in Home 7 (Knight doesn’t know which family will be in Home 7).

“I wish it was Kansas City,” Knight sighs, “even though they’re not playing well either. Extreme Makeover had the Denver Broncos contact us and send us some images and the Extreme Makeover crew ended up choosing the bird’s eye view of the stadium so it looks like you can walk into the picture.”

Applying custom inkjet printed wallpaper to a wallLexJet donated a roll of LexJet Velvet WallPro SUV to the cause, which Knight printed on his Epson GS6000 low-solvent printer, which he bought from LexJet in late July.

“I love the new Epson printer and it’s helped expand our business into other commercial work with banners, adhesive backed vinyl and the WallPro. The WallPro printed great; it looked like it did on the monitor to the printer. When I bought printer I also got the Onyx RIP software to go with it so I can be more accurate with color management,” says Knight.

The image was printed in two 48” panels with no overlap and installed by professional paper hangers who volunteered for the project. Though it may seem out of place in Missouri it will surely make someone devastated by the tornadoes happy.

The episode of Extreme Home Makeover: Home Edition featuring Joplin is scheduled to run later this fall on ABC. For more information about the project and the families, go to www.joinextreme.com/joplin.
