ONYX 18 Wide-format RIP Software Available from LexJet

Last month at FESPA, Onyx Graphics, Inc. announced the launch of ONYX 18, the newest version of the company’s wide-format software. The new version, available Monday, June 18, introduces new technology for color accuracy and consistency and is the first solution compatible with iccMAX, the new standard recommended by the ICC for all wide-format applications, including textile and soft signage.

ONYX 18 software will be available for the entire suite of ONYX solutions, including Thrive, ProductionHouse, PosterShop and RIPCenter.

Some of the highlights of ONYX 18 software include:

  • ONYX Color – is an industry-leading color engine. There are core enhancements for improved black ink combinations for increased shadow detail, texture and definition, with special application benefits for textile and soft signage
  • ColorCheck – a new approach to process control that enables Print Service Providers to guarantee color accuracy and output consistency across devices
  • iccMAX – is a new standard recommended by the ICC for all wide-format applications, including soft signage and textile
  • PosterColor 2.0 – first introduced to the industry by Onyx Graphics, it uses next-generation smart rendering intent to boost solid color saturation for added “pop” across all images
  • AccuBoost – is new for ONYX 18. It is an iterative profiling technique for pinpoint accuracy of ICC profiles

ONYX RIP Software Video: Named Spot Color Replacement

ONYX Named Spot Color ReplacementThere are times when a spot color does not print what is desired. For example, a particular red may be difficult to hit when printing to a matte surface material.

When this is the case, using ONYX RIP software, you can print Swatch Books to find the right color and then setup a Named Color Replacement to produce a print that contains a color that is as close as possible to the intended spot color.

In the video embedded below, learn how to print swatch books and replace a named spot color in ONYX…

Pre-Event Promotion with Big Graphics at the Point of Sale

Large Inkjet Printed Store Banner

Dew Downtown Flagstaff is rolling like the proverbial snowball. Now in its third year, the event turns downtown Flagstaff into one long terrain park where boarders and skiers compete for prizes.

As the event gains traction and grows each year, the P.O.P. print shop at Nackard Companies pumps out increasingly more graphics year over year. This year, Nackard has also been printing pre-event promotions, the largest of which is currently hanging in a local Sam’s Club over a 400-plus case display of Mountain Dew beverages.

The graphic is 16 feet wide by 8 feet tall, double-side, divided into four sections to make transportation of the graphic easier. Printed on LexJet TOUGHcoat Water-Resistant Polypropylene, the four sections are actually made up of six print panels, paneled together with double-sided tape.

“I used my ONYX RIP software to panel it properly before I printed it. Each panel is 35” x 8’: it was about six pieces total with a 1/2” overlap. I designed it at the final size and told ONYX to give me a 1/2” overlap,” explains Steve Lalio, P.O.P. shop manager. “I took the printed pieces, laminated it, trimmed off the excess and used double-sided tape to put it all together as one big banner. I also placed gray lines in the RIP to tell me where the four-foot sections were, and then cut it at each line for transportation.”

Lalio adds that they were trying to bridge the gap between a graphic that was too heavy and one that was too light. Originally, the customer wanted the graphic applied to Coroplast, but Lalio explained that it would make it too heavy. Fabric would have been too light, and Lalio wanted a material substantial enough to attach the 3D snowboarder to on the right side of the graphic.

Inkjet Printed Truck BacksLalio also reinforced the top and bottom with strips of 2’x 4′ Coroplast, which also acted as anchor when Lalio drilled the snowboarder into the banner. The snowboarder was printed on LexJet TOUGHcoat Water-Resistant Self Adhesive Polypropylene, laminated with LexJet 3 Mil Luster UV Standard Low Melt laminate, applied to a piece of Coroplast, and die cut.

Among other pre-event promotional graphics, Nackard also applied graphics the company’s Pepsi truck backs with LexJet Extreme AquaVinyl w/ PSA, laminated with LexJet 3 Mil Luster UV Standard Low Melt. Meanwhile, the shop is printing virtually non-stop for Dew Downtown Flagstaff, which runs Feb. 8-9.

Check back here for a recap of the graphics production for Dew Downtown Flagstaff sometime after the event. And, pray for snow (they could use more of the natural stuff for it).

Windows, Walls and Doors Contest: And the First-Place Winner is…

Casino Wall Mural by Illustrative Ink

Illustrative Ink took the top prize in LexJet’s Windows, Walls and Doors contest with this super-large wall mural for Hard Rock Casino in Biloxi, Miss.

The husband-and-wife team of Charles and Diana Punzo, aka Illustrative Ink, have an eye for décor and creating the perfect impression. In this case, it was time to update one of the casino’s nightclubs with appropriate graphics.

Illustrative Ink printed this wall mural on LexJet Simple WallCal (6 Mil) in nine panels with the HP Latex 260 Printer. Each panel was 54″ x 8′, except the ninth panel, which was printed at a narrower width for a total of 8′ x 38′ across the wall.

The panels were installed vertically top to bottom, overlapped and precisely seamed. Illustrative Ink used the tiling function in the ONYX RIP software to delineate the seams for a smooth and seamless application.

“It went up without a problem. We had three installers and were able to apply it in about two hours. The material is easy to position without having to stretch the image,” says Charles Punzo. “We installed it late this summer. It’s still up and everyone loves it.”

Congratulations again to Illustrative Ink for winning the top two spots in the Windows, Walls and Doors Contest. In case you haven’t seen the second- and third-place winners, here they are…
