Printer Review: Epson Solvent S-Series One Year Later

Last year I wrote a review describing my initial experience with the newest Epson Solvent SureColor S-Series printer, the S60600. You may recall that I could not find anything negative to write about it.

Well, I figured one year and hundreds of prints later is a good time to give everyone an update on these solvent printers. On our tech support floor, we run more than 25 different wide format machines. We typically use them to run profiles for each printer/product combination. There are times when we print on both the Epson S60600 and the Epson S80600 continuously five days straight. But the next month, we’ll only use the once or twice a week.

As a testing facility, we are a very odd user since we will have spells of not using a machine for some time, but that makes our situation prime for a review that is ideal to satisfy both types of users.

Epson’s S60600 a “Well Thought-Out Machine” for New FASTSIGNS Shop

When Liz Allen’s entrepreneurial spirit kicked in, and she decided to open up a FASTSIGNS franchise in Oviedo, Fla., she had a number of items on her to-do list, but perhaps few as important as purchasing a wide-format printer for the shop. When attending the ISA Sign Expo in Orlando earlier this year, she jumped on a discount offered in a show special, and purchased an Epson SureColor S60600 64-inch solvent printer from LexJet.

“FASTSIGNS did recommend the Epson,” Allen says. “We chose it because of its speed. It was three times faster than the other printer we looked at.”

Allen opened her new FASTSIGNS store in July, and because she’s new to wide-format printing, she hired Mike Howell, a seasoned sign shop printer, to manage production of banners, floor graphics, magnets and more of the shop’s offerings.

“I’ve been in the sign business for 30 years,” Howell says. “I saw the Epson printer when I was at FASTSIGNS corporate office, so I was able to get my hands on the printer. It’s very quick — a lot faster than a lot of the other machines I’ve used.”

With S-Series, Epson Delivers “Fastest Solvent Printers Out There”

While some in the industry may have typically used Epson printers for photographic, graphic arts and proofing needs, the introduction of the new SureColor S-Series machines have started to shift how people think of Epson in the signage printer realm.

“You can print non-stop, two to three times the speed you would normally print in comparison to prior generations or even other technologies,” says LexJet’s tech expert Michael Clementi. “Right now, these are the fastest solvent printers out there.”

The video above, produced by Epson, explains how the new Epson SureColor S40600, Epson SureColor S60600 and Epson SureColor S80600 64-inch solvent printers are geared to provide a wide variety of solutions, with the ability to print adhesive vinyl, banners, canvas, stickers, labels, package proofing and backlit.

“And not only have they sped up production, but they’ve increased the quality of the print as well, with the new ink formulas and printheads,” Clementi says.

“If your main business is banners and adhesive vinyl, there’s no doubt you should own one of these printers.”
