This Earth Day, we’re shining a spotlight on a story that perfectly captures the spirit of sustainability, creativity, and compassion. It’s the story of acclaimed photographer and Canon Explorer of Light, Vanessa Joy, who ventured to a small village in Kenya’s Maasai Mara- and came back forever changed.

What began as a photographic expedition quickly transformed into something much deeper. Immersed in the culture and daily challenges of the Maasai people, Vanessa witnessed firsthand the severe impact of limited access to clean water. Moved by what she saw, she made a decision: her lens would no longer just capture beauty- it would help create lasting change.
A Vision Fueled by Purpose
Vanessa’s Maasai Mara Project is more than a photo series. It’s a mission to raise awareness and funds for clean water initiatives in Kenyan villages. Through powerful imagery and storytelling, Vanessa aims to connect global audiences to the human stories behind the water crisis- and inspire them to take action.
But her vision needed more than passion- it needed the right partners to bring it to life.
Canon, Hahnemühle, and LexJet: Sustainable Art for a Sustainable Future
Canon stepped in as a key collaborator by providing Vanessa with a Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-4600 printer with a second roll unit to produce her images. With Canon's advanced printing technology, she has been recreating her powerful photographs in a way that can inspire action and generate support for her clean water initiative. Canon’s involvement goes far beyond hardware- it’s a reflection of the company’s larger commitment to sustainability and making a tangible difference in communities around the world.

Vanessa also found partners in LexJet and Hahnemühle, who share her values of artistry, quality, and environmental responsibility. Both are proud collaborators in Vanessa’s project, contributing high-quality, sustainable fine art media to ensure her work is printed with the care it deserves.
“We’re honored to support Vanessa and the Maasai Mara Project,” said Simon Waller, General Manager at Hahnemühle. “This initiative aligns perfectly with our values- especially our commitment to environmental and social responsibility.”
As a long-time pioneer in sustainable printmaking, Hahnemühle supports global social and environmental causes through its Green Rooster Program, an initiative that provides funding, resources, and visibility to artists and organizations making a difference. Their support for Vanessa’s mission is a natural extension of this legacy.

“Projects like these are exactly why we started Green Rooster,” Simon shared. “We were able to provide Vanessa with guidance, resources, and materials that are not only archival quality but sustainably made so her work can make an impact without leaving a footprint.”
The Power of Print
The prints from the Maasai Mara Project aren’t just beautiful, they’re impactful. Produced on eco-conscious Hahnemühle German Etching® 310 g fine art paper and LexJet’s Elements Maldives Recycled Semi-Gloss Canvas, each piece tells a story, raising awareness and helping fund clean water systems for communities in need.
