Weekend Viewing: LexJet’s YouTube Channel and Coming Attractions

YouTube printing videosOver the past few weeks tech guru and video maestro Sean McGettigan has been posting a slew of how-to videos at LexJet’s YouTube Channel.

Right now there are 35 educational videos, three product demonstrations (Canon iPF printers, LexJet Sunset Photo Metallic Paper and LexJet Simple Flo Wrap Vinyl) and a general LexJet video about ordering and tracking shipments at lexjet.com.

While we’ve been posting them here on the blog as they go up on YouTube’s LexJet Channel, we’re entering the next phase of educational videos. The current videos primarily address pre-printing workflow issues, such as how to download and install ICC profiles, printing through various configurations and software for Canon and Epson printers, tips using the ImagePrint RIP, how to print borderless and so forth.

The next round of videos will concentrate on hands-on production, such as how to set up and install various printers and printer troubleshooting (there are already some Canon iPF troubleshooting tips at the LexJet Channel) as well as step-by-step production tips for various large format print applications.

So check out everything that’s been posted so far and keep an eye out for the next round of videos. Please let us know if there’s anything you’d like to see demonstrated or explained and we’ll do our best to put it together for you.

How to use ICC Profiles and Color Management in ImagePrint

How to use ImagePrint Profile ManagerOne of the greatest things about ImagePrint is that it provides over 27,000 ICC profiles for use with the RIP software. They are broken down by printer, ink set and paper manufacturer. There are five color profiles available for each media. These profiles are specific to the lighting condition in which the print will be viewed. This helps to further reduce the metamerism or color shift that might occur in certain display conditions. A single grayscale profile is also provided for black and white images.

Make sure to check out the previous ImagePrint post, which detailed the ImagePrint workflow in three videos: Basic workflow, printing borderless and using the Step & Repeat tool.

In the first video below you will learn how to use the Profile Manager to download ICC profiles for use with ImagePrint.

The second video will teach you how to set up the Output and Input tabs found in the Color Management section of ImagePrint.

Three How-To Videos for the Price of One: Using the ImagePrint RIP

ImagePrint is the most popular RIP software on the market for professional photographers and fine art reproduction companies. Primarily compatible with Epson printers, ImagePrint optimizes How to use Step & Repeat in ImagePrintthe output from the printer while helping with a number of workflow concerns, including:

  • ICC profiles
  • Laying multiple images out on a single page
  • Printing multiple copies of the same image
  • Borderless printing
  • Tiling images
  • Package printing

In the first video below you will learn the basic workflow for printing through ImagePrint. The second video will teach you how to print borderless images, and the third video will teach you how to use the Step & Repeat tool for printing multiple copies of the same image.

How to Download and Install ICC Profiles for a Mac and a PC

How to download ICC profiles for a Mac and PCICC profiles are an integral part of color management in the printing process. When available, an ICC profile should always be used when printing to give you the best possible results and ensure the closest possible color match and rendering.

In the videos below you will learn how to download and install ICC profiles using a Mac or PC. Future videos will discuss the use of profiles when soft proofing images in Photoshop and the overall print workflow for Canon imagePROGRAF, Epson Stylus Pro, and HP Z series printers.

How to Find the Right Rendering Intent

Many people who print see the Rendering Intent option and are not exactly sure what it is and how it works. They usually select a Rendering Intent option a friend or colleague tells them to use and then think nothing more of it. It turns out that this selection can have a huge effect on how your image appears, and should therefore be understood fully.

Rendering Intents are mathematical rules on how to deal with out-of-gamut colors when moving from one color space to another. In other words, chances are that when you print an image there will be colors that your camera captured that are impossible for your printer to reproduce.

The printer driver can’t just delete the sections of the images it can’t reproduce or you would get images with large sections of nothing. Therefore, the driver changes those out-of-gamut colors to colors it can actually hit. The method it uses to do this is a Rendering Intent.

You may or may not have noticed that every time you hit print, there’s a Rendering Intent option. You can see it in the Photoshop CS3 print window (see the accompanying image sample). If you open up that drop-down menu you will see there are four options…
