Deadline Looming for December X-Rite Photo Contest, Theme Announced

Entering a themed photography contest each monthThe December theme for X-Rite’s Color Perfectionists Unite Photo Contest is Celebrating Family. Photographers and anyone passionate about perfecting color are invited to submit original photos based on the Celebrating Family theme from today through Dec. 15. Voting will take place Dec. 16-31 and the winner will be selected from the top 20 finalists determined by the number of votes for each photo.

Since the summer of 2011, monthly winners in the 2011 Color Perfectionists Unite Photo Contest series have been selected by a top professional photographer specializing in the area of photography related to each monthly theme.

Each monthly winner has also been featured on the X-Rite Photo blog and has received one of X-Rite’s new display solutions – either a ColorMunki Display or an i1Display Pro – and a ColorChecker Passport, providing each winner with the ideal tools to get accurate color from their cameras and displays. The top 20 finalists each month are featured in a monthly gallery at X-Rite Photo on Facebook and the Color Perfectionists Group on Flickr.

“Through the Color Perfectionists Unite photography contest, X-Rite has searched for and found fellow Color Perfectionists from around the world willing to brilliantly show us how much color means to them,” said Mark Rezzonico, vice president X-Rite Photo Marketing. “And with themes that have changed every month bringing us to the final theme just in time for the holidays – Celebrating Family – we are really pleased with the quality of images that have been submitted through the last five months and we’re sure December’s entries will bring us more of the same.”

To enter the contest:

  1. Submit an image that represents the theme for that particular month. There is no limit to the number of entries. Enter using Contest at X-Rite Photo on Facebook or visit www.xritephoto.com/photocontest .
  2. Follow @xritephoto on Twitter and Like X-Rite Photo on Facebook (contestants need to do both to be eligible to win).
  3. Contestants should invite friends and family to vote for their image. The top 20 photos with the most votes each month will be entered in the final round. The finalist images will be featured in a monthly gallery on Facebook and added to the Color Perfectionists Group on Flickr.

An X-Rite Coloratti will judge the 20 finalists to determine the winner of the best photograph that illustrates the theme of the month.

Extreme Snow Sledding on Sunset Select Gloss Canvas

Sledding downhill on inkjet canvasDo not try this at home, or in your studio. Now that we’ve got that disclaimer out of the way we can share an unusual thrill seeking ride that Jimmy Coray of Kimo’s Kamera took from the top of Mount Nebo’s south summit (11,877 feet, the highest in the Wasatch Range) 900 feet down at a 70 percent grade.

Kimo’s Kamera is a photography studio and photo lab located in Nephi, Utah, just a few miles from Mount Nebo. Coray makes the trek up to the summit every winter as well as a few times in the summer. This time around Coray sewed together a few pieces of LexJet Sunset Select Gloss Canvas to make an eight-foot long sled for the adrenalin rush immortalized on video (click here to see the video on the Kimo’s Kamera Facebook page).

Jimmy Coray prepares his Sunset Select Gloss Canvas "sled" for a 900-foot ride down 11,877-foot Mount Nebo in Utah's Wasatch Mountains.

“We had some extra canvas we printed that we didn’t get the color quite right, so I sewed them together and thought I’d give it a try,” says Coray. “The canvas didn’t rip or tear so I’d say that’s pretty good, plus it was fun.”

When Coray isn’t sledding on the canvas, he’s printing it for family photos and special projects.

“We love the gloss canvas; it has a great look to it. It’s been over the past year that we’ve really pushed the canvas and that’s been going very well for us,” says Coray.

Coray’s next experiment with LexJet media will be a mountain bike made out of Sunset Photo Metallic Paper. Just kidding, but then again, you never know…

Wide Format Inkjet Printing Business Intelligence at LexJet’s Updated Blog

As part of its recently re-vamped website at www.lexjet.com, and based on comments and suggestions from its customers, LexJet has updated and restructured its wide format inkjet printing industry forum and online educational resource at blog.lexjet.com.

The primary purpose of LexJet’s blog is to keep its customers and those involved in wide format inkjet printing updated about the latest industry news, tips and tricks and innovative projects and people, as well as best practices for sales, marketing and technology. LexJet’s Chief Information Officer, Pete Petersen, explains:

“Working in collaboration with Web developer atLarge Inc., we incorporated customer feedback and blogging best practices into the updated blog. We noticed, for instance, that it was difficult to leave a comment and interact with our authors and experts on the old blog, so we made the comments section for each post more visible and easier to use. The layout of the entire blog is much more consistent now so that you can navigate to another post and find the subject categories, comments and the most recent and most popular posts quickly.”

Previously, the subject categories were based on the market segments that utilize wide format inkjet printing, such as Photography, In-House Printing and Print for Pay. The new categories are more intuitive for the reader and are based on what they do as opposed to who they are.

The new categories are:

Inkjet Technology and New Products: Updates on the latest products and innovations for inkjet printing, including hardware, software, inkjet media and laminates and workflow tools.

Marketing and Sales: Marketing and customer service tips, plus upcoming seminars, conferences and webinars designed to build sales and maximize profitability.

Case Studies and Profiles: Find out who’s doing what and how they did it with wide format inkjet printing.

News and Trends: Trends, technology and news of interest from the wide format inkjet printing industry and beyond.

Tips and Tricks: Posts that detail how to make the inkjet printing workflow as efficient, productive and profitable as possible.

Twitter and Facebook integration has also been added so that readers can easily share stories and links with their colleagues and customers through those social media sites. And, users can follow the blog via RSS feeds or subscribe to email alerts when something’s been posted to the blog.

Petersen plans to post a series of articles on developing a blog and how the architecture behind it, such as plug-ins, maximizes search engine optimization and enhances the reader’s experience. “We’ll focus on how print shops can better market themselves and connect with customers and potential customers through the Web,” adds Petersen.
