If You Print, Expect Glitches with the Latest Mac OS, OS X Lion

Updating to Mac OS X Lion 10.7Apple is weeks, if not days away, from releasing its latest operating system, Mac OS X Lion 10.7, which will be available only through Apple’s App Store for about 30 bucks. As with all changes to any OS, whether Apple, Microsoft or any other platform, there has been much speculation about the impact on software that runs on the new OS, especially RIP programs, and the market in general.

Whatever the general impact may be, the best advice for anyone who’s ready to upgrade is… Wait. If anything has been learned from past OS updates, it’s this simple axiom.

For anyone who runs a wide format inkjet printer this is especially important since waiting allows printer and software manufacturers to fix any problems associated with the switch. Rest assured, engineers and developers are busily working out the kinks right now. However, they cannot possibly fix everything that users will run into as Lion rolls out.

So wait, and consult with your vendors before, during, and after any installation of a new OS. No one likes surprises when they have a color-critical job that prints off-target due to an unseen glitch in the operating system. ONYX Releases Version 10.1 of its RIP Software

ONYX Graphics announced this week the release of version X10.1 of its production RIP software products, including ONYX ProductionHouse, PosterShop and RIPCenter. In addition to being a

RIP software for large format inkjet production workflows

maintenance release to fix top reported customer issues, it also includes these enhancements:

  • G7 grayscale calibration support and integration with Curve2 Software, which is a proof-to-print process based on a set of color criteria developed to ensure digital print technology elements – RIP, printer, media and ink – can reproduce a typical offset lithography sheet.
  • Optional JDF module add-on for PosterShop and ProductionHouse for facilitating automated print workflows
  • Native CMYKR support for the HP Z6200
  • Multi-page PDF splitting workflow in RIP queue with Quick Sets where the ONYX RIP-Queue can process each different page size and optimize page nesting for maximum media savings and speed performance since each page can be processed and sent to the printer individually, without having to wait for the entire PDF file to be processed
  • Easy profiling for white-ink printers
  • Added CMYK compatibility mode
  • Print-and-cut media compensation
  • New measurement device support, including low-resolution swatch support for i1, new Barbierie Spectro LFP textile device and Barbierie 8mm aperture for supported devices

This update requires a Version 10.1-enabled key, so Version X10 users that purchased a license on April 11, 2011 or later are already licensed and can download the new version from www.onyxgfx.com. Current ONYX Advantage and ONYX Premium service plan holders, as well as customers with Version X10 licenses purchased after Dec. 1, 2010, can obtain the update for free by contacting sales@onyxgfx.com and requesting a key update.

Inkjet Printing Workflow: Tiling Images for a Large Display

There are two methods for tiling images to create a large display. First, you can use software like Adobe InDesign, Illustrator or Photoshop to crop the image down into individual sections for print. However, the easiest and most efficient way I have found to do this for printing is in a RIP software.

Here, I want to cover an 18-ft. wide x 80-in. tall wall. I'm printing on a 36-in. wide roll of media, so I need six tiles of 36 in. x 80 in. to complete the graphic.

Tiling is a pretty common task for the signage industry, so RIPs for that industry seem to handle tiling best. If you’re running Onyx, for example, you have a lot of control over how you tile large images.

ImagePrint, which is more geared toward photographic and fine-art printing, has a more simplistic version of tiling that will also allow you to perform this task. Think of the sign industry RIPs as more industrial for large production runs, and ImagePrint as more custom, for shorter runs in a photographic/fine-art workflow.

In ImagePrint, you simply fill the tiles with the image you plan on breaking up into panels, and hit print. It's that easy!

Either way, a RIP will make all the difference in the world for the quality of your images, and the efficiency and profitability of your workflow, including tiling large images together.

ColorByte Software Enhances ImagePrint 8.0

The latest newsletter from ColorByte Software has two items of interest to users (and potential users) of ImagePrint 8.0 print-management software for inkjet photo and fine-art printing.

Version 8.0.0.4 is ready for download. This maintenance release is free to all owners of ImagePrint 8.0 and can be installed using ImagePrint’s Easy Updater. ImagePrint 8.0.0.4 improves file browser performance by caching thumbnails. It retains the cache even after ImagePrint is closed and a new session is started at a later time.

The Queue Manager has also been updated to support re-ordering of print jobs.
