Get Inspired: 10 of Our Favorite Customer Projects of 2015

Throughout the year, we’ve been awed and inspired by the innovative work our customers have created: from wall murals and tote bags to gallery exhibits and social statements. As the year draws to a close, we’ve been reflecting on some of our favorites, and thought we’d share them with you again. While there were many more excellent projects that we featured over the year, here are 10 of the blogs we thought our readers would enjoy revisiting as much as we did:

6 FInishedChurch’s Sleek New Student Center: Clear Lake Press transformed St. Thomas More Catholic Newman Center in the Minnesota State University Campus’ student center into a fun gathering spot. “It was one of those projects, when it started, I was extremely nervous about it,” says Eric Erickson, who used LexJet Print-N-Stick Fabric for the wall mural. “All of those nerves were laid to rest as we were installing it.

Photo Class Asks: How Might We See the Beauty in All People?

Each year, Dennis Grantz challenges his photography students to finish a question: “How might we …?” His most recent class decided to take on the issue of diversity, and asked: How might we help our peers see the beauty in all people?

Throughout the year-long class, the West Michigan Center for Arts & Technology students had a variety of discussions on the topic, ventured out into the street to conduct interviews, and gathered stories about how people faced discrimination in their lives. “Out of that, a lot of cool stuff came together,” Grantz says.

Print-N-Stick Bonds with Anti-Bullying Program, UNIFY

Robert Charles Photography used LexJet Print-N-Stick Fabric to make their anti-bullying statement.

Edward and Robert Zemba, brothers and owners of Robert Charles Photography in East Longmeadow, Mass., know what bullying looks like. They both saw it firsthand growing up.  Now, with children of their own and many high school senior clients who visit their studio, they felt compelled to partner with those students to launch the anti-bullying campaign, UNIFY, Unique iNdividuals Inspiring Future Youth.

The program included a fashion show held in late April with a variety of high school-aged children of various backgrounds, shapes, ethnicities and physical abilities making their way down the runway. The event, sponsored by dozens of local companies and attended by more than 400 people, raised funds to support anti-bullying efforts and educational programs at area schools.

“This was an outreach project with high school seniors to encourage awareness,” says Robert Zemba. “The fashion show was wrapped around celebrating diversity. In the show, we had performances that really told the story about bullying and how kids work together to overcome bullying.”

With the students, the Zembas created the video below to promote the event and deliver the group’s message:

During a performance at the fashion show and in the video, which focuses on name-calling and “labeling,” the Zembas printed various words on LexJet Print-N-Stick Fabric, a removable self-adhesive product. The words were stuck on and later removed from one of the kids to emphasize using positive labels rather than hurtful ones.

IMG_0018Prior to the event, the Zembas created an 80-inch-by-100-inch wall display, also printed on Print-N-Stick, that was installed at Enfield Square Mall. The display, pictured at left, was made up of four 42-inch wide images that were printed on an Epson Stylus Pro 9900 44-inch printer, a recent addition to the Robert Charles Photography studio, purchased from LexJet.

“We came up with a display that was very powerful and very well received,” Robert says. “The best part was that the folks at the mall very concerned about a ‘wallpaper display’ — was it permanent? But we explained that the Print-N-Stick would come right down with no residue left behind. Once we showed them the product, they said, ‘Oh wow, that’s great!'”

The addition of the large-format Epson printer, Robert says, has provided increased flexibility to do more in-house printing. “To be able to print 44 inches wide is a game changer for us,” he says.

The UNIFY video and program have received attention across the country, the Zembas say, and they’re working on spreading the message further and planning the 2016 fashion show event.

“We are big believers in giving back,” Robert says. “And this was a way to give back to the kids we work with and inspire them and let them know they’re not alone.”

How to Cover a Wall for Less than $2 per Square Foot

Our Experience Center team took on the challenge of completely refreshing a 26-foot-by-7-foot wall using LexJet Print-N-Stick Fabric.

In the video above, watch how the team installed 36-inch panels across the entire wall to create a faux-wood wallpaper-type treatment. They then finished it off with a variety framed canvas pieces.

The Print-N-Stick part of the project took 4 hours and cost less than $2 per square foot, with no messy wallpaper glue and no residue left behind on the wall, should they decide to give it a makeover again.

Church’s Sleek New Student Center Gets an Old-Time-y Touch

With all of the creative minds and customization options in the large-format and graphics world these days, there’s no reason not to give a new building a little extra personality.

That certainly was the mindset for St. Thomas More Catholic Newman Center on the Minnesota State University Campus with its newly constructed student center in Mankato, MN.

Completed in the fall of 2014, the center’s interior spaces were blank canvases — ideal for custom graphics and finishing touches to give the center a welcoming and friendly feel. One area of the new space, a sleek, circular counter set up for group chats and snacks, was a perfect place for a personal touch.

Working with Clear Lake Signs of Waseca, MN, a division of Clear Lake Press, staff at St. Thomas More and Eric Erickson, Clear Lake’s pre-press systems administrator, graphic designer and artist, put their heads together to come up with some large-format graphics ideas for the blank wall behind the counter.

At first, the thought was to enlarge a photo as the backdrop, but as Erickson chatted with the church leadership, a new idea emerged.

“As we were discussing the details, it evolved into a custom art piece with a lot of elements relevant to their history and who they were and their mission,” Erickson says.

He took pencil to paper and started sketching. An old-fashioned, Irish pub theme emerged with a pencil sketch of a wooden bookshelf, a brick wall, Fr. Paul Halloran lifting his glass and a series of taps named after the nine virtues found in Galatians 5:22-23: love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. The books, photos and trophy drawn into the bookshelf all have special meaning to the church and its members.

The original drawing was 25-by-29 inches, which Erickson then scanned in at 1200 ppi and enlarged 750 percent. He added color to the logo and printed the image on four 44-by-150-inch panels onto LexJet Print-N-Stick Fabric using his Canon imagePROGRAF printer. Clear Lake Press’ diverse services include web and sheet-fed presses, interior and exterior signs, vehicle decals and wraps, banners and all types of fabric applications.

“I had used Print-N-Stick on smaller projects. This is our largest Print-N-Stick project to date,” Erickson says. “I like it because of the white point of the paper – there’s very little show-through of the wall color underneath it, the vibrancy of color and the fact that it’s repositional. This project itself isn’t really a repositional application, but if they ever want to take it down, the Print-N-Stick won’t damage the wall underneath it.”

While it took the Canon only about a half hour to print each panel, Erickson and Clear Lake Press’ large-format expert Tonya Wittman spent the better part of a day installing the panels in the new fellowship hall.

“It was one of those projects, when it started, I was extremely nervous about it,” Erickson says. “All of those nerves were laid to rest as we were installing it. People would walk in and comment how much they loved the different elements and style of it and everyone was just so amazed by it.”

Next up: St. Thomas More and Clear Lake Press have more projects in store to complement this project and the previously completed exterior and interior signage for the building. Erickson says they’re working on a 12-foot mural of teen’s faces in St. Thomas More’s game room.

Wall Couture Makes an Impact with Man Under Water

LexJet Print-N-Stick Wall Mural

Ken Gemes Interiors creates inviting, timeless interior environments for the discerning home owner, whether that owner is ensconced in the city or wants to revitalize a more pastoral location.

Having recently moved to the firm’s new location in Mount Vernon, N.Y., founder and president Ken Gemes transformed a warehouse space into a showcase of the firm’s design expertise. One of the pivotal components of the new space is a 15-foot-wide by 9 1/2-foot tall conference room wall mural from décor specialist Soicher Marin, based in Sarasota, Fla.

Soicher Marin has developed a line of wall coverings called Wall Couture™ that combines LexJet’s Print-N-Stick Fabric as the base material with designs, patterns, photos, art and graphics from Soicher Marin’s extensive art library, each uniquely selected and custom-printed for the client’s environment.

One of the benefits of Wall Couture/Print-N-Stick is its ease of use: it’s repositionable, removable and re-usable, and much easier to apply than traditional wallpaper or adhesive-backed vinyl. In this case, Soicher Marin printed the photograph, Man Under Water, in eight 28-inch-wide panels and sent the panels to Ken Gemes Interiors.

“Soicher Marin gave us excellent instructions and the mural went up without a hitch,” says Gemes. “The image is a real show-stopper in the conference room, and adds a big wow factor to our space.”

Soicher Marin’s Katie Bellinder says the key to a seamless application is in the overlap. “We print an inch overlap so that when they apply it to the wall, you put the first panel down, then the second one next to it with an inch of overlap, and so forth for each subsequent panel,” she says. “Then, you take a straight edge and cut off the overlaps so that you have perfect seams that don’t show. It’s not like traditional wallpaper, where you almost always have leftover material you won’t use. We print only what they need.”

The mural was printed on Soicher Marin’s HP Latex 260 Printer. Bellinder says the latex inks provide additional durability, and that scuff marks and dirt are easily removed with a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser.
