Printing the Town’s Grocery Store at Spectra Imaging

Inkjet Wall Mural

Spectra Imaging in Louisville, Ky., has a way with walls. When the opportunity to provide wall graphics rolls around, as it does quite a bit, Spectra Imaging takes it to the next level.

One of Spectra’s most recent projects involved turning blank walls into a grocery store for Junior Achievement’s BizTown in Louisville.

BizTown is a 7,000 square foot town where kids learn about life in the real world, like budgeting and finance, as they buy goods and save their money at the local “bank.”

Inkjet Wall GraphicsKroger sponsored two rooms and sent Spectra Imaging photos taken at one of their stores to replicate on the walls. Spectra put the files together to create one seamless image that would cover the walls from floor to ceiling in both rooms. Spectra also routed out dimensional letters and logos for the rooms.

“The walls are fairly textured so I asked my LexJet rep, Sammi Calabrese, what would work best. She told me that an adhesive vinyl would be more likely to peel off the walls, so she recommended we use something designed for rough and textured walls,” says Brian Rogers, owner of Spectra Imaging. “The project turned out really cool.”

Spectra used LexJet Simple MTS Adhesive Vinyl for the application. Simple MTS Vinyl has a more aggressive adhesive for textured walls and surfaces that don’t form a secure bond with conventional removable adhesives. The vinyl can also be easily removed for up to a year after installation.

Double Black Diamond Wall Mural on Print-N-Stick Fabric

Vail Mountain Wall Mural on LexJet Print-N-Stick Fabric

Offices can be boring. In fact, they usually are boring. Adam Zimmerman, owner of Z2 Technologies, West Long Branch, N.J., recently elevated his brother Jeff’s office space in both altitude and attitude for a welcome office makeover.

Adam and Jeff are avid skiers and usually make an annual trip to Vail, Colo. Adam photographed Jeff as he began to make his way down one of Vail’s double-black mogul runs on a snowy powder day in April.

The shot was perfect for a large wall mural and Adam found the solution to reproduce the photo with LexJet’s new Print-N-Stick Fabric.

“My rep at LexJet, Michael Clementi, recommended the adhesive-backed fabric, so I did a test print 44″ tall by 60″ wide to see what it would it would look like. We were a little nervous about blowing it up that large given the resolution, but it looks great. Up close, it looks like a painting, but the farther you stand away from it the more detailed it is. The print quality exceeded my expectations,” says Adam.

The image was printed on Print-N-Stick Fabric with a Canon iPF8300 and applied in panels.

“The oils on your fingers can leave smudge marks so to ensure a clean look we’ll use a seam roller next time,” says Adam (you can also use Sunset Gloss Coating or Sunset Satin Coating to protect a wall mural from fingerprints and smudges). “This was a great test for us since we’ve never installed a large wall mural. Now we feel confident that we can sell it as one of our product offerings.”

Engaging the Public with Photo Art on Walls, Paper and Fabric

Eric Mencher Instagram Installation at Photo Lounge

Photojournalist Eric Mencher interprets Instagram a bit differently than most. He sees it for it is – a social media outlet meant to connect – but more importantly as a canvas.

Eric Mencher Exhibit at Photo LoungeMencher’s interpretation of life on Instagram, using an iPhone as the capture device for the exactly 777 photos he rotates through his page, also resides physically at Photo Lounge in Philadelphia.

Ravid Butz of Photo Lounge has a long-standing professional and personal relationship with Mencher. Butz believes that his photo lab should be more than just a place where people can get their photo and fine art work reproduced; it should also reflect Philadelphia’s vibrant art community and make it accessible to its citizens.

So the two long-time partners partnered on an ongoing exhibit of Mencher’s work in Photo Lounge’s lobby printed in various formats with inkjet media.

Eric Mencher Instagram Mural on Print-N-Stick“Eric has a substantial following on Instagram and here in Philadelphia through his work when he was with the Philadelphia Inquirer, and as a local photo artist. He’s very approachable and real and his work feels so ordinary, but is clearly so masterful,” says Butz. “I brought up the idea that we would print his entire Instagram collection and display it up on the wall. At first I thought we would print 777 5x7s and tape them to the wall, but then I started talking to people in the arts community and they said it would be more artistic to arrange them on sheets and use our Epson wide-format printer to print them. That way, it’s more about the art than just 777 print samples.”

Butz enlisted Julie Blaukopf and Alex Peltz to help curate the ongoing exhibition and create a multi-media experience designed to enhance the presentation and engage and engross people in the work.

Inkljet Wall Mural at Photo Lounge“We wanted the show to be relevant to everyone in our community, and not just the art community. We also wanted those in the art community to take notice that Photo Lounge is seriously involved in their world and that we have capabilities that can expand how they present their art,” says Butz. “Additionally, there are pictures taken every day with iPhones and we see tremendous opportunity to bridge that gap to unique printing applications. Everyone knows how to share it through social media, but every day a lot of customers come in and are surprised to find out that we can print from their iPhone. There are a number of ways to bridge them from their phone to us, and we know they make beautiful prints.”

The focal point of the exhibit is a 100″ x 16′ wall mural featuring Mencher’s 777 images printed on LexJet Print-N-Stick Fabric. From those images Butz and his collaborators pulled out a number of photos reproduced on Sunset Velvet Rag and Sunset Photo Metallic Paper and mounted with a frame built on the back that stand out from the wall.

Digital Tapestries on LexJet Water-Resistant ClothMoreover, four 2′ x 4′ digital tapestries were created, printed on LexJet Water-Resistant Satin Cloth and hung in the windows. “They look different at different times of the day,” says Butz. “They’re somewhat translucent, so they look stunning from the street at night with the interior lights behind them, and great from the inside during the day with the light shining in from outside.”

The exhibit is ongoing so anyone can walk in and enjoy it, with special events sprinkled in, such as seminars and workshops.

“Our regular customers and passersby are amazed that you can do this; they’re telling us that they’ll go home, measure their walls and create their own custom wallpaper,” adds Butz.

Wall Mural Follow-Up on Print-N-Stick Fabric

A few days ago we discussed the use of wall murals to set the theme and create anticipation for the various travelling exhibits hosted by the Orlando Science Center. The travelling exhibits typically run for about three months and the Orlando Science Center has made wall murals a standard feature.

“Once we started with the Star Wars wall mural there was no turning back,” says Eric Vickers, creative manager for the Orlando Science Center. “The foot traffic to the exhibit comes in from the right, so you see the mural right away and then walk into the exhibit.”

Just installed yesterday to replace the wall mural fronting the recent Sesame Street Presents: The Body exhibit, the new mural previews the Zoom into Nano travelling exhibit.

The new mural was printed on LexJet Print-N-Stick Fabric with a Canon iPF9100 from LexJet. The key to making this mural effective was the ability to hold the detail of the materials shown in the graphic, from left to right: a butterfly wing, salt, oyster shells and moon dust.

“The mural is really impressive in person, and provides more visual interest so that you’re engaged before you walk in. You can really see the texture, especially in the butterfly wing, when you get close,” says Vickers.

Vickers adds that the mural is based on four hanging posters used for the exhibit. Vickers laid out the four pieces together and added the copy. Having four different panels was convenient for lining up the printed panels, which were 35 inches wide by nine feet long.

“We used to apply the panels horizontally so we had fewer seams, but it’s more difficult to keep it level all the way down. Working vertically we can make it level and let gravity work for us so that the application goes more smoothly. The panels were easy to apply and the material holds its shape really well,” says Vickers.

Re-Stock and Re-Stick: LexJet Print-N-Stick Fabric Now in Stock

LexJet Print-N-Stick Fabric

LexJet’s new Print-N-Stick Fabric gives you the best of both worlds: true photo-quality printing on an easy-to-apply, repositionable and removable adhesive-backed fabric. That’s why it sold out almost immediately.

Print-N-Stick is now back in stock and available through LexJet’s North American Delivery Network.

If you’d like to request a free printed sample to see all the qualities that make Print-N-Stick a must-have inkjet material for print production, click here.

The reason for the repositionable adhesive-backed fabric’s popularity boils down to ease of printing, application and removal, plus the unprecedented imaging quality you get from the bright-white print surface. But don’t take our word for it. Here’s just some of the feedback we’ve received since the product was initially launched this summer…

“It’s very easy to use; it doesn’t stick together when you take the backing off of it and doesn’t stretch when you peel it off the substrate to realign it. You can apply it to a surface and it won’t take the texture off the wall or leave a sticky residue behind.”

Amanda Hill, graphics manager, Odom Corporation

“Print-N-Stick really pops; the saturation and image quality is really crisp.”

Sarah Hoefert, visual imaging specialist, Rudinec & Associates

“I really like the image quality we’re getting from the Print-N-Stick Fabric; it actually prints better than most of the adhesive-backed materials we use, including vinyl.

John Fritz, production manager, Canyon Distributing
