A Mural Project for the Birds … and the Bears and the Gators, Too

Photographer Brian Hampton had been shooting the wildlife at the Audubon Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary in Naples, Fla., for years before an idea to collectively capture many of the creatures came to him.

While individual photos of the animals were stunning, Hampton had a different visual in mind: A collage of 20 different species that live in the Sanctuary. This “masterpiece mural,” as he calls it, could become a signature piece of art in the main visitors center at Corkscrew, which has approximately 100,000 annual visitors.

Sanctuary print

Hampton, and his wife, Donna, donate photography and video work to several organizations and wanted to do the same for Corkscrew. Hampton commissioned artist Tom Heflin to paint the original 30-by-60-inch collage. Once complete, Hampton had it scanned digitally, then he printed the 7-by-14-foot mural in 3-foot-wide panels on Sunset Select Gloss Canvas using his Canon imagePrograf 8400 printer. The panels were applied to a custom wall panel installed in the center.

“I was looking for a canvas that would show the mural’s brilliant colors,” Hampton says about his choice in Sunset canvas. “Sometimes canvas can look really flat, and I wanted a more saturated look.”

The Hamptons created a video that gives a look behind the scenes of the project:

The mural was installed in early February 2015, and since then Hampton has used the same image to make T-shirts and posters, which have sold well at Corkscrew’s gift shop. “I’m hoping others will want to do something like this in their towns,” he says.

Wall Couture Makes an Impact with Man Under Water

LexJet Print-N-Stick Wall Mural

Ken Gemes Interiors creates inviting, timeless interior environments for the discerning home owner, whether that owner is ensconced in the city or wants to revitalize a more pastoral location.

Having recently moved to the firm’s new location in Mount Vernon, N.Y., founder and president Ken Gemes transformed a warehouse space into a showcase of the firm’s design expertise. One of the pivotal components of the new space is a 15-foot-wide by 9 1/2-foot tall conference room wall mural from décor specialist Soicher Marin, based in Sarasota, Fla.

Soicher Marin has developed a line of wall coverings called Wall Couture™ that combines LexJet’s Print-N-Stick Fabric as the base material with designs, patterns, photos, art and graphics from Soicher Marin’s extensive art library, each uniquely selected and custom-printed for the client’s environment.

One of the benefits of Wall Couture/Print-N-Stick is its ease of use: it’s repositionable, removable and re-usable, and much easier to apply than traditional wallpaper or adhesive-backed vinyl. In this case, Soicher Marin printed the photograph, Man Under Water, in eight 28-inch-wide panels and sent the panels to Ken Gemes Interiors.

“Soicher Marin gave us excellent instructions and the mural went up without a hitch,” says Gemes. “The image is a real show-stopper in the conference room, and adds a big wow factor to our space.”

Soicher Marin’s Katie Bellinder says the key to a seamless application is in the overlap. “We print an inch overlap so that when they apply it to the wall, you put the first panel down, then the second one next to it with an inch of overlap, and so forth for each subsequent panel,” she says. “Then, you take a straight edge and cut off the overlaps so that you have perfect seams that don’t show. It’s not like traditional wallpaper, where you almost always have leftover material you won’t use. We print only what they need.”

The mural was printed on Soicher Marin’s HP Latex 260 Printer. Bellinder says the latex inks provide additional durability, and that scuff marks and dirt are easily removed with a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser.

I Love L.A.! Printed Cityscapes Give Office Walls New Life

Custom Wallpaper by ThumbPrint

ThumbPrint, based in Simi Valley, Calif., was instrumental in transforming an office space in the heart of Los Angeles into a custom experience.

Wallpaper Graphics LexJet Pebble WallPro SUVWhat ThumbPrint’s Kenny Miller calls a “tenant improvement project” for the building located on Wilshire Boulevard near Beverly Hills was certainly improved with the addition of the black-and-white wall murals.

Three of the murals focus on Los Angeles cityscapes, while another features a classic photo of Ben Hogan swinging away on a golf course (the client is an avid golfer). The trick in pre-press was creating consistency among the murals, which ThumbPrint did by adjusting the levels so that the blacks and grayscale matched as closely as possible, creating consistency from mural to mural and room to room.

ThumbPrint Custom Wall GraphicsThe images were printed on LexJet Pebble WallPro SUV 15 oz. by York with a Seiko ColorPainter M-64s low-solvent printer with 3M SX inks, and applied with wallpaper paste.

Two of the cityscapes were applied in conference rooms and measure 89″ x 134″. The image with the palm trees in the foreground were applied to a freestanding wall, covering 89″ x 110″, and wrapped about eight inches around either side of the wall. The Ben Hogan photo is 90″ x 130″ and is the office’s focal point.

“We ordered samples of a few different textures, and Pebble was what the client wanted. It was a good choice because it has a real nice look and feel to the print with some dimension to it, and I like the price point. When you look at it from different angles it gives you a bit of shimmer shine to it. It printed great, and the customer was really excited when we installed it,” says Miller. “The WallPro went down on the walls better than I anticipated. I just went to the wallpaper store and got rollers and adhesive paste. It took about three and a half hours to apply all of it. I mostly do adhesive vinyl, which goes up faster, but this has a nicer look to it and it doesn’t show the seams like vinyl does. I like the way the 15-oz. applied to the wall; there was never a time I was frustrated with it. It completely transforms an office space into something custom and a more inviting space.”

Another Promotional Brick in the Wall

Faux Inkjet Printed Bricks Wall Mural

Brian likes bricks. See Brian make bricks… out of Photo Tex PSA Fabric – Solvent Printers from LexJet.

Brian is Brian Rogers, founder and CEO of Spectra Imaging in Louisville, Ky. He recently brought brick indoors to cover the outside of Spectra Imaging’s showroom.

Inkjet Printed Wall MuralThe outside of Spectra Imaging’s building is covered in brick so Rogers wanted to continue that theme inside to give the space more character, instead of just boring painted walls. More importantly, it makes visiting customers and prospects stop and look, and to ask how Spectra Imaging did it.

“We’ve had a lot of people say that when they first glanced at it they thought it was real brick. Then, the more they looked at it they realized that it wasn’t brick at all and wanted to know more about it,” says Rogers. “We’ve sold a lot of wall murals to companies that see it and want it on their walls; not necessarily brick, but once they know we can print any image on the material, then that’s what they want.”

Inkjet Printed Bathroom DecorAnd sometimes they do want brick, like the customer who requested a brick wall mural for their bathroom décor (pictured here).

“It’s great for companies to dress up their offices because they can use any image. And, if a year later they want to take it down, they can remove it without leaving any residue behind or damaging any of the drywall,” adds Rogers.

Ultimately, the interior décor at Spectra Imaging is a powerful sales tool. And what makes it that much more powerful in this case is the print of a seemingly infinite hallway in and amongst the “brick” on the back door of the showroom.

Rogers could have wrapped the door, but chose instead to print the image directly to a big piece of foam board with a flatbed UV-curable printer. Once the door handle and deadbolt were removed, the printed foam board was stuck to the door with double-sided tape.

The longer wall with just brick is 32 feet long and 82 1/2″ high; the shorter wall with the door is about 20 feet long and the same height. Rogers applied the brick graphics on the longer wall in two panels horizontally. The graphics for the shorter wall were applied in three panels horizontally.

“When we created the file we factored in the door and basically cut it out in the file. Then, we printed the top and bottom panels for the left and right side of the doors and a third smaller panel to apply above the door,” explains Rogers. “To make it as seamless as possible we apply it horizontally. A lot of people apply theirs in vertical panels, but even though it’s a little more difficult to apply it horizontally, I don’t like doing it that way because you create more seams. With this project there was only one seam on each wall in the middle of the wall. We also take our time and use two people for the installation. One person holds the roll and starts applying while the other pulls the release liner.”

Celebrating UW Wrestling with Print-N-Stick Fabric

University of Wisconsin Photo Wall Mural

It’s a request that’s becoming more common: Can you put up graphics and murals that I can easily tear down and replace without damaging the wall? Andy Wredberg, owner of AW Artworks in Sun Prairie, Wis., has just the print material for that request: LexJet Print-N-Stick Fabric.

The University of Wisconsin’s wrestling program was looking for replaceable graphics featuring its current wrestling team national tournament qualifiers, and a photo wall mural for its offices.

Pillar Prints by AW Artworks“We applied the images of their national qualifiers to the big concrete pillars that run through the wrestling center. They have summer camps in the center and wanted something the kids would see and aspire to while they’re in there,” explains Wredberg. “The surface of each pillar is rough and has a lot of imperfections, but the Print-N-Stick contoured to the surface variances really well.”

Wredberg printed six poster-sized images (18” x 36”) for the wrestling center pillars. To ensure an even presentation across the wrestling center, Wredberg added Bucky Badger, UW’s mascot, to the mix since there were five national qualifiers represented.

Bucky Badger printed on LexJet Print-N-Stick Fabric“With the tight weave and bright white point and the Print-N-Stick Fabric, the blacks are blacker and it has a richness you don’t typically see in a fabric,” says Wredberg.

For the office mural, Wredberg printed three and half 44”-wide panels applied vertically from ceiling to floor. The photo mural commemorates the record-breaking attendance (more than 10,000) at the most recent Big Ten wrestling tournament held at UW’s arena. David Stluka Photography captured the image from the Big Ten tournament used for the photo wall mural print.

“To make sure everything lined up we picked a few of the elements – the signs and banners going across the picture horizontally – to key off of. The whole thing went up quickly and easily; I was pleasantly surprised. From start to finish, including taking all the furniture out, installation and trimming, it took about an hour and a half. I couldn’t be more pleased,” says Wredberg.

LexJet Print-N-Stick Fabric
Mission accomplished: The boring Jumbotron image was seamlessly replaced, actually covered up, with a swatch of Print-N-Stick emblazoned with the Wisconsin logo.

As a final touch, Wredberg is changing the image on the Jumbotron in the photo. Actually, he’s not replacing it, but printing a new image to be placed over it on Print-N-Stick Fabric. We’ll add a photo of the updated mural to this post when it’s been applied, so check back to see how it turned out.

“After we applied the mural they asked if we could put something different on the Jumbotron because the current image is kind of boring. So, we measured it, I’ll print the image, trim it to size and cover up that little section. It will be pretty seamless. You would be hard-pressed to do that with other materials and have it look as good as it does with Print-N-Stick,” adds Wredberg.
