Entering and winning photography competitions can help you gain national and international exposure for your work. Over the next few weeks, we will be publicizing some of the many competitions that can help you earn recognition for your talents.
Magnum Photos, in association with HP, have announced the second annual Expression Photography Award. The award was established with the goal of raising awareness and inspiring change through projects that use photography as an expressive medium. Its mission is to help discover and illuminate compelling documentary photography.Entries will be judged by an international panel of four Magnum photographers (Jim Goldberg, Martin Parr, Trent Parke, and Mark Power) and one representative from HP’s large-format printing group.
One chosen winner will receive a $10,000 grant to support the continuation of his/her work, plus an HP Designjet Z3200 wide-format photo printer additional prizes from contributing partners Blurb and PhotoShelter. Two honorable mentions and the remaining 17 finalists will also receive awards to support and encourage their photographic work. There is no cost to enter and photographers around the world are encouraged to submit entries. You can submit images from a completed project, or one that is still in progress.
The judges will be searching for revealing imagery that illustrates dedicated compassion and intensity using photography as a medium. They will be evaluating entries on the basis of:
• Excellence and inventiveness in building a photographic narrative.
• Singularity of vision and compassion for the subjects.
• Ability to produce a thought-provoking visual presentation.
You have until Sept. 30 to upload, edit, sequence, and submit your submissions. Twenty finalists will be posted on The Magnum Expression Award website in October. For full details on how to enter, visit the Magnum Expression Award website.
