Pittsburgh in Inkjet-Printed Multi-Media Relief

Fine Art Triptych by Hudson Valley Giclee and Bruce Bleach

This corporate fine art triptych is another colorful collaboration between Jeff Fina of Hudson Valley Giclee and abstract fine artist Bruce Bleach. The pair often team up to bring unique fine art to corporate and other environments.

In this case, Bleach created the overall design, which Fina tweaked in Photoshop and prepared for printing. Fina printed the image on LexJet Sunset Select Matte Canvas and coated it with Sunset Satin Coating.

Fine Art Canvas Printing“Red and blue are very hard to reproduce, but the red on this canvas is as deep a red as you can get. You typically can’t hit colors like that with canvas since it doesn’t have as wide a color gamut as Sunset photo papers, but the combination of this canvas with the coating really brought out the richness of the colors,” says Fina. “I like LexJet Sunset Canvas much better than any other canvas. It’s easier to work with, easier to wrap and the color gamut is better.”

Once printed and coated, the piece was glued to wood and Bleach cut it out along the lines that Fina included when he prepared the file for print. Bleach also added scored and colored pieces of metal that give the piece more shine and relief, complementing the overall look of the design.

“A lot of artists, and especially Bruce, want to experiment beyond just printing, so Sunset Select Matte Canvas is a really good medium to meet their need to experiment because it’s also durable and easy to finish, especially with the Sunset Coating,” says Fina. “I know someone who left his canvas with the Sunset coating in the snow. I’m not sure why or how it got there, but the canvas was still perfect after that and he never thought in his wildest dreams that would ever happen. So, when you cut around the canvas, there’s no damage to it at all because of the quality of the canvas and the coating.”

A Growing Market for Wide Format Printing at PostNet North Port

PostNet North Port Showroom
PostNet North Port’s show room features numerous samples of the store’s wide-format inkjet capabilities with a Canon printer and LexJet inkjet media.

The PostNet store in North Port, Fla., like other PostNet locations across the world, provides a full slate of printing-related services. Over the past three years or so, the North Port location has seen its wide-format printing operation grow substantially each year.

North Port PostNet owner Joyce Klingle estimates that wide-format printing now accounts for about 30 percent of the store’s sales, which is quite a jump over three years given the plethora of products and services the store offers its clients.

PostNet North Port Storefront
PostNet North Port’s storefront features LexJet Aqueous Perforated Vinyl used to promote the store’s printing services.

A big break came when a local Perkins Restaurant manager noticed samples of perforated window graphics at North Port PostNet. The manager asked for pricing and a sample to send to Perkins’ headquarters, which led to a contract to ship window graphics all over the U.S.

“Our customer specialist at LexJet, David Iannotti, first told us about what we could do with perforated window film. Any time we have a question about anything all we have to do is call David; he’s our go-to guy for information about wide-format printing,” says Klingle. “We printed more than 1,500 window perf graphics for this project and laminated them since we knew they would be displayed outdoors.”

The project came off without a hitch and helped contribute to the positive word of mouth so crucial to this PostNet location since it’s not located on busy Highway 41, which bisects North Port.

“We’ve been at this location for three years. We were located across the street from here for about two years before we moved into this location,” explains Klingle. “We rely a lot on word of mouth and people coming in to see what we can do.”

And they can do just about anything with their Canon iPF8000S, though the bulk of their wide-format printing is for canvas gallery wraps printed on LexJet Sunset Select Matte Canvas and coated with Sunset Satin Coating, banners typically printed on LexJet TOUGHcoat ThriftyBanner and window graphics on LexJet Aqueous Perforated Vinyl.

“Every year our wide-format printing increases by about 50 percent,” adds Klingle.

Promotional Production with Sunset Production Matte Canvas

Printing photos on canvas

Always looking for an edge, Dan Johnson, owner of Dan Johnson Photography in Grand Rapids, Mich., has found one with LexJet’s new Sunset Production Matte Canvas.

A longtime proponent of the Sunset canvas line, particularly Sunset Select Matte Canvas, Johnson was looking for a canvas that would split the difference between consistent quality and economy for his “mass market” work.

When it comes to custom canvas projects, Johnson generally sticks with the more high-end Sunset Select Matte Canvas, but he also prints what he calls a “promotional” product: consumers find Johnson through an online promotional site and send Johnson a photo they want on canvas. It’s quick and easy for Johnson to produce and provides a consistent cash flow, he says.

The Sunset Production Matte Canvas helps boost margins a bit and those on the receiving end are quite happy with what they’re getting.

“We got our first roll of the canvas recently and printed 10 to 12 pieces from it right off the bat. Within a couple of days, clients who received their canvases left really positive comments on Facebook or directly through email,” says Johnson. “My first impression of the canvas was that it lets light through, but once you coat it, paper the back and hang it on the wall it doesn’t matter. No one hangs it with light purposely showing from the back. Ultimately, I was impressed: the color comes off just right and it works perfectly with Sunset Satin Coating. And, because it’s not as thick, it’s easier to stretch and make the corners look really nice.”

When Johnson fulfills the order he includes a coupon that sends these customers to his website for more.

“We hope we get them back and that they’ll want more canvas or other types of prints. We can provide a fairly consistent cash flow with these promotional offers. The cost savings with the Sunset Production Matte Canvas is fantastic and is very helpful for us with these promotional products,” says Johnson.

New Sunset Canvas from LexJet Designed for Production

Production inkjet printable canvasPrint shops and art reproduction companies looking for an economical inkjet-printable canvas alternative for longer production runs that provides consistent quality can now add LexJet Sunset Production Matte Canvas to their arsenal.

“Of course I really like the price of this new canvas from LexJet, but it still provides good color reproduction. It has a little more tooth to show the canvas texture for mass production projects that require that look,” says Richard Herschberger, owner of Herschberger Galerie in Arthur, Ill. “I also like the fact that I can get it in 60-foot rolls so I’m not changing it out as often; you get more bang for the buck that way.”

LexJet Sunset Production Matte Canvas has been engineered for the latest aqueous printer and ink set technologies from Canon, Epson and HP. It is a bright-white, water-resistant 100% polyester matte canvas with the look and feel of a traditional 2-over-1 weave for all types of art and décor applications. It’s designed to work flawlessly with Sunset Gloss Coating and Sunset Satin Coating, either sprayed or rolled on.

“The new canvas effectively rounds out our award-winning Sunset Canvas line because it gives companies with high-production environments the perfect balance between price and quality in a highly repeatable, consistent large format inkjet print solution,” says Alex Ried, LexJet product manager. “That’s what we were aiming for when we developed it, and our feedback so far indicates that we hit the target.”

Successful Adaptation to Changing Times at PhotoGraphics Maui

Fine art photography printing and mounting
This fantastic Hawaiian surf image by Franck Berthuot of Berthuot Visuals (www.berthuotvisuals.com) was printed on Sunset Photo eSatin Paper and mounted to Masonite.

PhotoGraphics Maui illustrates how someone can do what they love while their business model changes radically over the years. In PhotoGraphics Maui’s case, the company’s evolution started about 30 years ago when Japan was the world’s economic powerhouse.

Printing and mounting fine art photography
The customer was blown away by the treatment of this photo, which is Sunset Photo eSatin mounted to black-stained bamboo and finished with a non-glare plexiglass.

In the ’80s, Japanese tourists were flocking to Maui, Hawaii. Arriving literally by the busloads, PhotoGraphics Maui’s owner, Renee Zaima, started shooting tour group pictures.

“We processed our own film and pumped out pictures every day. Then we would go to the airport and sell the pictures to them,” explains Zaima. “Then we got into wedding photography and videography with the Japanese. We used to send our small prints out, but the lab was closed on weekends. With the Japanese we were doing an average of 80 weddings a month and we had to get the albums to them before they left. So, if the wedding was at four o’clock that day and they were leaving the next morning at 8 we had to have the photos and the video ready for them.”

That business largely dried up in the ’90s, coinciding with Japan’s “lost decade” when markets dived and Japan’s economic growth slowed to standstill, a harbinger of things to come in the American economy in 2008.

Fine art and photography printing
Most of these images were printed on Sunset Photo Metallic Paper and mounted to aluminum. Renee Zaima, owner of PhotoGraphics Maui, says a lot of customers come in and buy the images off the walls. "I don't take a commission on the ones we sell because I know the photographer or artist will want to print more," she says.

Fortunately, PhotoGraphics Maui was able to pick up the slack by shifting its business to traditional photo lab work for photographers while still offering photography services. The next big shift came with the Internet boom and the digital age.

“When the digital world and the Internet happened, we started concentrating on fine art. We still do everything, but we print more reproductions for artists than we did before,” says Zaima. “You have to change with the times. It’s hard to catch up when you don’t stay on top of those changes. We’ve done that by going to large format inkjet printing and offering the mounting services.”

Inkjet printing photography and mounting to aluminum
This image is Sunset Photo eSatin Paper mounted to aluminum and finished with non-glare plexiglass.

Those two differentiators are the company’s bread and butter; the bread being the large format printing and the butter the mounting services. In order to keep that business smooth and efficient, Zaima needed to supply the two Epson Stylus Pro 9800 inkjet printers with consistent products.

“We were getting everything from a variety of vendors, and sometimes the boxes weren’t even marked or the products weren’t consistent. We were wasting money because we had to keep re-doing our projects, and finally we found someone who was consistent with our customer specialist at LexJet, Sukesh Pathak,” explains Zaima. “We love the canvas and the coatings we get from LexJet [Sunset Select Matte Canvas, Sunset Satin Coating and Sunset Gloss Coating], and Sukesh has been on top of things for us. I get emails when he’s not even at work to follow up with me on products and shipping. I also have LexJet’s Sales & Application Guide book that I can show my customers, because everyone’s looking for something different.”

Those different media options for PhotoGraphics Maui include LexJet Sunset Photo eSatin Paper and Sunset Photo Metallic Paper. The combination of different media with a range of mounting substrate options helps set PhotoGraphics Maui apart.

PhotoGraphics Maui mounts to aluminum, Masonite, bamboo and other materials, sourcing and cutting the materials themselves. The prints are typically applied edge to edge with a layer of non-glare plexiglass on top and channels on the back so the pieces “float” off the wall.

“I can’t compete with stores that offer prints terribly cheap. We stay away from that, which is why we’re so glad we found LexJet because now we can order everything we need,” says Zaima. “We go with what our customer’s needs are, so I’m constantly looking for something new that will catch their eye. I can’t make money printing 4x6s; that era is gone. With a product like Sunset Photo Metallic and our floating frame, it looks very modern and contemporary and the photographers love it; it’s probably our most popular product.”
