Loading Paper and Printer Settings on the Epson SureColor T-Series

How to operate Epson inkjet printersLast week at the LexJet Blog we let you know about Epson’s new line of wide format printers, the SureColor T-Series for architectural, engineering, and corporate graphics, and posted a few videos to help with printer setup.

Along with setting up the printer, seeing how to load roll paper and where many of the various settings are on the printer’s front panel (LCD) should be just as helpful, especially for your day-to-day work with the printer.

Embedded below, in the order shown, are videos that will show you how to load roll paper and how to access the various printer settings on the LCD panel…

A Successful Formula for Inkjet Printed Fabric Graphics

Inkjet printed fabric banners for trade shows

The last time we spoke with Formula Boats, the marketing department – led by director of communications Tonya Hamilton – had just completed a spectacular wall mural for the front lobby of its headquarters in Decatur, Ind.

Printing fabric banners for a trade showWhile the wall mural is an amazing accent that wows visitors and brings passersby on the nearby road in for a closer look, where the rubber really meets the road (or the rudder meets the water in this case) is at boat shows.

For a classy look that brings out the best in the boats the company is showcasing, Hamilton has been using LexJet Poly Select Heavy SUV. The inkjet printable fabric also images well and is lighter and easier to transport to the more than 50 shows at which Formula Boats exhibits its wares.

“We’re trying to draw attention to the booth and to the dealers in the booth. The banners provide the quick information they need to know about us and our dealers beyond picking up a catalog,” says Hamilton. “The Poly Select fabric is so much richer and nicer than a regular banner material or decals; it makes our boats pop better and gives the banners more visibility.”

But fabric can have a Beauty and the Beast quality about it. The Beast factor is the same one that makes it a Beauty. Since most fabrics are relatively light, it can be difficult to get enough tension for a smooth print.

“We’ve had some problems with the tension on certain fabrics. The take-up reel will fight against the main roller on the printer, where the head is located. We figured out a way to correct the issue by taping a few inches of the fabric in the center to the take-up reel. Then, we cut the edges of the fabric off in a 45-degree angle from the tape to the edge of the fabric so the leading edge taped to the take-up reel comes to a point and looks like an envelope, which gives it more tension as it prints,” explains Hamilton.

Running fabric through a printerP.S. I asked our technical support director, Adam Hannig, about the tensioning issue, and he uses the same basic method on all substrates, fabric or not, to ensure smooth printing all the way through. However, he cuts in a half circle from where the leading edge is taped to the take-up reel, creating a smoother edge that’s less likely to get caught in the rollers (see photo). Also, Hannig adds, be sure to use just one piece of tape in the center.

Problem solved, and Hamilton adds that she prints a lot of duplicates since the company attends so many boat shows each year. For instance, she printed 15 of the 13-foot-long Formula banners, which you can see in the righthand side of the first photo. She also prints banners for dealer showrooms and for the dealer to use after the show at their own follow-up event.

Canon imagePROGRAF Layout Plug-In for Canvas Printing

Software plug-in for printing canvas wrapsAs noted here earlier at the LexJet Blog, Canon recently announced a new line of wide format inkjet printers, and with these new printers comes a time-saving piece of software called the imagePROGRAF Layout Plug-In.

This software, exclusive to the new printers, allows users to bypass the usual steps in Photoshop of creating a mirror or solid color border around their canvas images for wrapping by automating the process after making a few selections.

Among other things, the Layout Plug-In allows you to enter:

  • The desired print size
  • The thickness of your stretcher bars
  • The amount of canvas you want to stretch around the back of the bars for stapling
  • Border effects like reflection (mirror), soft reflection (mirrored and blurred), and custom colors

After making your selections, the software generates the canvas and even automatically opens it in the imagePROGRAF Print Plug-In for Photoshop where you can print it.

In the video embedded below, learn about the various options that are available for your canvas prints and how to use the imagePROGRAF Layout Plug-In…

A Festival of Sight and Sound Printed on Canvas

Stephen Kerner, the Woodstock, N.Y.-based fine artist (www.stephenkerner.com) and fine-art printer (www.stonerivergiclee.com) profiled here at the LexJet Blog about this time last year, is no stranger to the abstract. Nor is Kerner a stranger to complicated, outside-the-lines projects that challenge and perplex.

Printing graphics for music festivalsBoth of these qualities – the abstract and the complicated – as well as Kerner’s 20-plus years of experience came to the fore on a recent project he completed for big-show set designer and promoter Marco Ferrero, who also owns Vivo Fine Art gallery in Woodstock.

The result was a giant pyramid structure, covered in canvas and complete with projected video and extensive LED lighting designed for music festivals. The structures most recent stop was at the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival held earlier this month in Manchester, Tenn.

This design, which was really creative, was totally his. One night he approached me about the job. I thought it was fantastic and didn’t realize he was ready to go into production. It happened very fast, as a lot of things do. A lot of people were involved in a lot of different levels.

“He approached me about creating 18-foot tall pyramids and printing his design, which was triangles within triangles. Marco designed them in many different colors and we tested them on a lot of different substrates: backlit, canvas, vinyl and even metals. We printed a lot three-foot test panels, and he chose LexJet Instant Dry Satin Canvas. He liked that look and the canvas looked beautiful; there was such vibrancy to the colors,” says Kerner.

Inkjet printing on canvas for a music festivalKerner printed four panels for each triangle that made up each three-sided pyramid on his Epson Stylus Pro 11880. These panels were seamed together by printing a two-inch bleed area, folding it over and joining the panels with either LexJet Heavy Duty Banner Tape or an industrial adhesive.

Then, the canvas was attached to the metal framework with grommets on all three sides placed at three-inch intervals. The final pieces were then coated with a solvent-based ClearStar coating from LexJet.

“The satin canvas is durable up to a certain point, but the festivals are outdoors and there’s typically a lot of rain down in Tennessee this time of year so they wanted to make sure they were heavy duty,” explains Kerner. “The problem we had here was with curing times on both the coating and the adhesives were using to the seam the canvas. It rained here constantly, so the humidity was high, making those curing times much longer than normal.”

The pyramids open up and reveal 12×12 video screens while hiding all the video equipment that runs the screens in the base while another pyramid houses huge speakers. Ultimately, the pyramids were designed as both festival décor and as practical working devices to bring the show closer to the thousands who throng the festivals Woodstock-style.

Coating and finishing canvas“It was very complicated and it’s probably the most difficult project I’ve worked on. It took many weeks of collaboration and tons of math to make everything fit just right and work together,” says Kerner. “When you’re dealing with triangles everything is on an angle so it’s a lot different than dealing with a square piece.”

Kerner adds that he also collaborated with world-renowned Nevessa Studios and its owner, Chris Anderson, on the fine details of the project.

This Month Only: Save $50 on a 54″ x 100′ Roll of Solvent Photo Tex

Printing wall murals on an adhesive backed fabricYou may remember Photo Tex from such LexJet Blog posts as: Solving a Maze with Inkjet Printing on a Ceiling, How to Apply Wall Graphics with Photo Tex, and Printing the Big Picture for Conferences and Trade Shows, among many others.

The point is, this extremely versatile, easy-to-work-with-apply-and-remove inkjet printable fabric has become one of the most popular inkjet materials in the market over the past few years for applications as wide ranging as die-cut wall graphics, full wall murals, window graphics and even temporary vehicle graphics.

And now, the solvent/low-solvent version of Photo Tex is on sale this month only, today through June 30. So, when you buy a 54″ x 100′ roll of Solvent Photo Tex you’ll get $50 off the regular price. If you buy online, use Promo Code PTSFR. We suggest you stock up with one order (the promotion is limited to one order only) as your savings will obviously increase with each roll purchased.

As a reminder, Photo Tex is an adhesive-backed fabric with a special adhesive that makes a cinch to apply and remove and leaves no residue behind. One of the lesser-known qualities is the ability to take it down and repeatedly re-use it. Photo Tex works well for life-size photographic cut-outs, wall murals, windows, doors, sign boards, backlits and other flat, non-porous surfaces.
