Louisville Slugger: How Spectra Imaging Built a Thriving and Growing Business

Brian and Leslie Rogers started Spectra Imaging in their 500-square-foot garage about seven years ago with a Mac mini and a Canon iPF8000. Since that time, Spectra Imaging has grown exponentially, eventually occupying 6,000 square feet of space in a Louisville, Ky., office building, adding additional employees and ramping up its production capabilities.

First, Spectra Imaging is debt-free. All of its equipment purchases are paid for, alleviating the additional burden that debt payments can have on a company. Second, Spectra Imaging emphasizes a show-and-tell approach to sales.

“The growth of our company is attributed to our drive and determination and just getting out in front of people,” explains Brian Rogers. “You can’t just walk in there, hand them a brochure and tell them that this is what you can do. When our salespeople meet with customers they have a sample case and an iPad. There’s an image on our site of a very large sign on the front of a building for a hardware company, for example, and our salespeople have a smaller version of that exact sign, printed on the same material and applied to the same substrate. That way, they can see how the material works and what it looks like when it’s done. A brochure is not good enough.”

Whatever the material used, Spectra Imaging is armed with physical samples and various options for a collaborative, consultative and ultimately productive meeting.

“Customers are looking for something different and unique; they don’t want the same stuff they’ve been getting. LexJet has been instrumental in keeping us updated about new products we can add to our sample case so we can show customers what’s available and what they can do with them,” adds Rogers.

Spectra Imaging can provide just about any imaging product and service to its customers, including graphic design, scanning original artwork, printing and stretching canvas, custom framing and practically any large-format application.

Rogers says his favorite materials are the aforementioned Photo Tex PSA Fabric (both Aqueous and Solvent), LexJet Simple Adhesive Vinyl (Semi-Matte and Gloss), LexJet 10 Mil Opaque Display Film, LexJet Production Satin Photo Paper PSA and LexJet Sunset Fine Art, Photo and Canvas media.

“The great thing about Sammi [Spectra Imaging’s LexJet customer specialist Samantha Calabrese] is that she’s familiar with the products we’ve used and is quite helpful about making recommendations and letting us know about new products,” says Rogers. “Even if we’re not buying a product from LexJet, like our HP 9000, Sammi did some research and helped us find other LexJet customers who had one so we could get some feedback from them about the printer before we bought it.”

Magazine for digital art and productionAs noted earlier in July here at the LexJet Blog, Digital Art Creation magazine premiered as a digital publication and is now available optimized for the iPad at Apple’s iTunes store. The app is free and a monthly subscription is $3.99.

Sweetwater: What Sweet Customer Service Sounds Like

Sweetwater deserves a spot on my bumper. When I apply a bumper sticker to my car I never use the space to promote a political position or ideology. Instead, I use the bumper as a means to promote and thus reward companies that provide amazing customer service.

Unfortunately, I don’t have a Sweetwater bumper sticker. Instead, I’ll share my experience with Sweetwater here at the LexJet Blog. While part of my reason for sharing is that great customer service should be rewarded by sharing it with as many people as possible, the other is to share some tips on what great customer service looks like, or in this case, what it sounds like.

I found Sweetwater whilst searching the Web for someone who carries the iJam and accepts PayPal. The iJam is a device that allows you to plug your guitar into your iPhone or iPad and play and record said guitar with GarageBand.

I ordered it expecting the typical online shopping experience, which is basically an email verifying the order, and that’s about it. What I got instead was a follow-up call from someone personally assigned to my account, Jason Koons, to see if I had any questions and to let me know he was available if I had any questions or needed any help with the iJam when I received it.

Jason wasn’t pushy; just helpful. The iJam shipped as promised, and was packaged with a catalog and some candy as a nice extra personal touch (I gave most of it to my kids; I don’t have a sweet tooth).

Jason keeps in touch via email ever so often to let me know about sales and new products at Sweetwater. Again, Jason doesn’t harass me and I appreciate the helpful check-up correspondence.

I’ve had problems here and there with products I bought online that didn’t show up on time (and one time not at all). In such cases I wasted a lot of time punching 0, 1, 3 and various other digits on my telephone keypad to finally talk to a human being, who is usually located overseas in a land that rhymes with Bindia. Not so at Sweetwater. I call Jason and usually get Jason, and if I don’t someone else is right there with my account information and ready to help.

My most recent order was a couple of sets of guitar strings and some picks. It wasn’t a big order by any means, so I didn’t expect the same service this time around. Wrong. Same service, despite the fact that my order was less than $20. They called to let me know that they didn’t have the exact same style of pick I ordered in stock and recommended a similar style. Fortunately, I’m not that picky (pun intended) and went with their suggestion.

Ultimately, Sweetwater has picked up a customer for life simply because they treat me like a person and not a number. I know they’re likely to get the order right the first time, and even if they don’t I’ll receive individual attention. Sweetwater doesn’t just say they value my business, they show it in tangible ways.

There are many facets to customer service – an easy to use and navigate website, logistics, the right products and other supporting systems – but if you lack that all-important personal touch the rest is all for naught.

The new magazine is dedicated to educating and inspiring artists and photographers that utilize a part or whole digital workspace. Digital Art Creation will be published monthly and is expected to be available at the Apple newsstand later this month.

“Digital photographers, painters and even traditional image makers utilizing digital negatives will find useful information and inspiration in the magazine”, says Tim O’Neill, owner of Prosperity Publishing. “We will focus on blending traditional art with new techniques available in the digital realm,” he adds.

Digital Art Creation magazine is essentially a re-branding and an expansion of the content found in Digital Paint Magazine. While Digital Paint Magazine was primarily a magazine dedicated to digital painters, as the title of the magazine implies, Digital Art Creation expands the focus and includes photography techniques, post capture software and techniques, printing and post-printing ideas, and an exploration of a variety of other techniques and platforms.

Sections of the magazine include: Capture, Image Processing, Marketing Buzz, Great Output, Post Print and a Marketplace. A Reader’s Gallery will be added in the second issue.

“We are not abandoning our love and dedication to digital painting; Digital Art Creation encompasses many different arenas in image capture and processing and distills that information with a focus on fine art,” says O’Neill.
