Weekend Viewing: LexJet’s YouTube Channel and Coming Attractions

YouTube printing videosOver the past few weeks tech guru and video maestro Sean McGettigan has been posting a slew of how-to videos at LexJet’s YouTube Channel.

Right now there are 35 educational videos, three product demonstrations (Canon iPF printers, LexJet Sunset Photo Metallic Paper and LexJet Simple Flo Wrap Vinyl) and a general LexJet video about ordering and tracking shipments at lexjet.com.

While we’ve been posting them here on the blog as they go up on YouTube’s LexJet Channel, we’re entering the next phase of educational videos. The current videos primarily address pre-printing workflow issues, such as how to download and install ICC profiles, printing through various configurations and software for Canon and Epson printers, tips using the ImagePrint RIP, how to print borderless and so forth.

The next round of videos will concentrate on hands-on production, such as how to set up and install various printers and printer troubleshooting (there are already some Canon iPF troubleshooting tips at the LexJet Channel) as well as step-by-step production tips for various large format print applications.

So check out everything that’s been posted so far and keep an eye out for the next round of videos. Please let us know if there’s anything you’d like to see demonstrated or explained and we’ll do our best to put it together for you.

How to use ICC Profiles and Color Management in ImagePrint

How to use ImagePrint Profile ManagerOne of the greatest things about ImagePrint is that it provides over 27,000 ICC profiles for use with the RIP software. They are broken down by printer, ink set and paper manufacturer. There are five color profiles available for each media. These profiles are specific to the lighting condition in which the print will be viewed. This helps to further reduce the metamerism or color shift that might occur in certain display conditions. A single grayscale profile is also provided for black and white images.

Make sure to check out the previous ImagePrint post, which detailed the ImagePrint workflow in three videos: Basic workflow, printing borderless and using the Step & Repeat tool.

In the first video below you will learn how to use the Profile Manager to download ICC profiles for use with ImagePrint.

The second video will teach you how to set up the Output and Input tabs found in the Color Management section of ImagePrint.

Three How-To Videos for the Price of One: Using the ImagePrint RIP

ImagePrint is the most popular RIP software on the market for professional photographers and fine art reproduction companies. Primarily compatible with Epson printers, ImagePrint optimizes How to use Step & Repeat in ImagePrintthe output from the printer while helping with a number of workflow concerns, including:

  • ICC profiles
  • Laying multiple images out on a single page
  • Printing multiple copies of the same image
  • Borderless printing
  • Tiling images
  • Package printing

In the first video below you will learn the basic workflow for printing through ImagePrint. The second video will teach you how to print borderless images, and the third video will teach you how to use the Step & Repeat tool for printing multiple copies of the same image.

Inkjet Printing Workflow: Tiling Images for a Large Display

There are two methods for tiling images to create a large display. First, you can use software like Adobe InDesign, Illustrator or Photoshop to crop the image down into individual sections for print. However, the easiest and most efficient way I have found to do this for printing is in a RIP software.

Here, I want to cover an 18-ft. wide x 80-in. tall wall. I'm printing on a 36-in. wide roll of media, so I need six tiles of 36 in. x 80 in. to complete the graphic.

Tiling is a pretty common task for the signage industry, so RIPs for that industry seem to handle tiling best. If you’re running Onyx, for example, you have a lot of control over how you tile large images.

ImagePrint, which is more geared toward photographic and fine-art printing, has a more simplistic version of tiling that will also allow you to perform this task. Think of the sign industry RIPs as more industrial for large production runs, and ImagePrint as more custom, for shorter runs in a photographic/fine-art workflow.

In ImagePrint, you simply fill the tiles with the image you plan on breaking up into panels, and hit print. It's that easy!

Either way, a RIP will make all the difference in the world for the quality of your images, and the efficiency and profitability of your workflow, including tiling large images together.

ColorByte Software Enhances ImagePrint 8.0

The latest newsletter from ColorByte Software has two items of interest to users (and potential users) of ImagePrint 8.0 print-management software for inkjet photo and fine-art printing.

Version 8.0.0.4 is ready for download. This maintenance release is free to all owners of ImagePrint 8.0 and can be installed using ImagePrint’s Easy Updater. ImagePrint 8.0.0.4 improves file browser performance by caching thumbnails. It retains the cache even after ImagePrint is closed and a new session is started at a later time.

The Queue Manager has also been updated to support re-ordering of print jobs.

ImagePrint 8.0 Is Now Available for the Epson Stylus Pro 7900 and 9900 Printers

Epson Stylus Pro 9900

ColorByte Software has completed the development of ImagePrint 8.0 RIP software for the Epson Stylus Pro 7900 and 9900 printers. The software is the first to incorporate a brand-new color-management engine that can fully utilize the expanded gamut made possible by the Epson UtraChrome® HDR inkset that uses 10 inks, including orange and green.

According to ColorByte, ImagePrint 8.0 users can anticipate seeing as much as 40% more color volume on the 7900/9900 compared to the Epson 880-series printers.

“You won’t see the benefit of our new color engine if you are printing 8-bit images or in a smaller-gamut color space such as sRGB,” explains ColorByte president John Pannozzo. “But for those who are willing to step forward and use new technologies such as 10-bit displays, ImagePrint 8.0, and Epson printers that use UltraChrome HDR inks, you will be able to print a wide range of colors never before possible.”

ColorByte has also announced that ImagePrint 8.0 is now available for the 17-in. Epson Stylus Pro 3880.

Use ImagePrint 8.0 to lay out notecards, album pages, posters, or displays

New Features in ImagePrint 8.0: If you aren’t yet familiar with this newest version of ImagePrint, check out the demos on the ColorByte website. Many of the new features can help you print a wider variety of sellable products, including photo books, art cards, posters, and canvas wraps. Here’s a brief recap:

Text: You can now add text anywhere on the page, using any font on your system. You can create text of any size or color-with or without a drop shadow.

Backgrounds and frames: When designing album pages or posters, you can add a solid or another image as a background. Then, you can frame and matte any image on the page.

Templates with backgrounds and artistic frames: Put a photograph behind your templates, or use a solid color. Every frame within the template can have its own colored background too.

Better crop marks and annotations: You can now see the crop marks and captions on the page—not just on the print.

The Boundaries feature lets you lay out multiple pages on a wide roll of media.

Boundaries: This tool makes it easy to divide your page into croppable sub-pages, making it efficient to print a higher volume of book pages on wide rolls of media. Once you’ve gathered all of the elements of a page layout (text, backgrounds, multiple images) and marked them with group crop-marks, you can easily move everything on that sub-page all at once. Everything within the area bounded by the group crop marks will keep their position on the sub-page.

Extended and mirrored edges for gallery wraps: If you are making canvas prints that will be stretch-mounted, ImagePrint can automatically extend and mirror the edges of the image to cover the sides of the stretcher bars.

A new spoolface:
ImagePrint makes it easy to monitor, edit, archive, reprint and cancel print jobs. It also enables you to control print jobs running on multiple computers and printers. With the spoolface, you can see which jobs are in the print queue and which jobs have been saved for future use. Job previews let you see a thumbnail of each file in the queue or archives.
Use ImagePrint to easily create edges for gallery wraps.
