Fine Art & Photo Repro Pros Prefer Sunset by Fredrix Matte Canvas

Printers who specialize in producing fine art and photo reproduction have their own set of requirements that canvas must deliver, such as high white levels, ease of use and excellent image and color quality. That’s why many providers who offer high-end gallery wraps, for example, rely on LexJet Sunset by Fredrix Matte Canvas.

“We’ve been using the Sunset by Fredrix canvas for about four months now,” says Chris Capel from The UPS Store, Aurora, OH, who uses the canvas on his new Epson SureColor P9000 printer. “The image quality is outstanding, and flesh tones are beautiful.”

The UPS Store uses the Sunset by Fredrix canvas in gallery wraps and fine art reproduction paired with Sunset Satin Coating for extra protection. Because Sunset by Fredrix Matte Canvas is Wilhelm certified for permanence, Capel says it’s an easy sell.

“The Wilhelm certification gives some legitimacy in our quality and overall value proposition,” he says.

Gerardo Gonzalez-Quevedo of Miami’s Prints Giclee Shop agrees and says the OBA-free canvas stretches well. “It’s very flexible,” he says. “It doesn’t scratch very easily, and I’ve never had a problem with cracking.”

Gonzalez-Quevedo’s shop specializes in color-accurate fine art and photo reproduction, and helps with every stage of the process, from scanning and proofing to framing and canvas wrapping, such as the 15-foot-by-60-inch tall mural-sized canvas featuring historic Cuban images, pictured above.

The acid-free, pH neutral, poly-cotton canvas’ archival status is a top concern for his clients. “We get asked for archival canvas all the time,” he says.

LexJet Sunset by Fredrix Matt Canvas key features:

  • Easy to stretch and finish for multiple display applications
  • Compatible with the latest aqueous printers and inks
  • One of the brightest white points for a natural, OBA-free canvas
  • Traditional two-over-one weave with a pH-neutral, acid-free base

  1. Does this canvas require a UV Water Resistant Coating? If so, what do you recommend?

    • Hello Brian,
Thank you for your question on our Sunset By Fredrix Matte Canvas. We recommend coating this solution with our Water-Based Sunset Coatings (either Sunset Satin or Sunset Gloss coating). If you intend to stretch the canvas over bars, you should use water-based coatings. If you want to keep the finish matte and if you are just mounting and not stretching, you can use Hahnemuhle protective spray that goes on clear and offers some scuff and UV protection.
      Thank you!
      Michael Clementi
