Prints that Win: Kung POW Chicken!

Tracye Gibson Sunset Print Award

For the second year in a row, Tracye Gibson, M. Photog., won a Sunset Print Award for her artistic flair and masterful use of Photoshop and Corel Painter.

Last year’s winner, Little Miss Muffet, combined Gibson’s portrait photography with digital paint. This time around Gibson had an idea featuring fighting roosters, but didn’t have any roosters nearby to photograph.

“For the Master Artist competition category at the Southwest PPA you don’t have to take the photo yourself; you just need to show how you put the elements together,” explains Gibson. “I usually shoot my own photography for that category, but I don’t have any roosters in my backyard here in Fort Worth. I know I’m from Texas, but… I’ve been obsessed with roosters and chickens lately because I like trying to figure out how to paint all the different feather textures.”

Gibson bought stock rooster illustrations (the four images at the bottom of the panel) as the basis for the image she had in mind and went to work with Photoshop and Painter.

“I composited different parts of the roosters together and positioned them in Photoshop. Then I took it into Corel Painter and painted in multiple layers. I like to add colors with pencil on the print, but I didn’t have time for that,” says Gibson. “For the background I went in and grabbed some colors from the roosters, drew some oval squiggles and overlaid them over each other. I took that into Photoshop and put a motion filter on it – zoom, I think – so that it gives it that center pow look. I did some cloning with different brushes, did a lot of dodging and burning, and always take it into Photoshop and apply other filters and layers as well.”

Gibson framed the final print with two layers of plain white mat. Though Gibson says she normally uses Sunset inkjet paper for her competition prints, she used Hahnemuhle Torchon for this image because she thought the texture of the paper complemented the image. Gibson floated the mats a bit, added a bevel to the outer mat and colored the bevel with a burnt-orange pencil.

“Presentation is very important, especially in the Master Artist category, because they want to see the before images, and sometimes it’s hard to get them on there without being distracting,” says Gibson. “I laid the before images on top of the top mat, backed everything up, photographed it, and sent the file in digitally just in time for the deadline.”

sunset matte srSunset Photo Matte Paper 280g is now available exclusively at LexJet. Ideal for fine-art reproduction, high-quality fine photo prints, photo albums and high-end poster décor, the smooth archival paper produces superior color saturation and a high Dmax for high-impact image reproduction.

Sunset Photo Matte Paper is the thickest, heaviest and most durable (280g, 12-mil) inkjet paper in its class, and is also priced lower than most comparable papers, providing both value and quality.

“It’s a great paper with a slightly warmer tone, which is perfect for fine-art printing. It makes a beautiful print and it’s thick and easy to handle, but has a lower price point,” says Chip Wright of Mastercolor Professional Labs, Greensboro, N.C.

I Love L.A.! Printed Cityscapes Give Office Walls New Life

Custom Wallpaper by ThumbPrint

ThumbPrint, based in Simi Valley, Calif., was instrumental in transforming an office space in the heart of Los Angeles into a custom experience.

Wallpaper Graphics LexJet Pebble WallPro SUVWhat ThumbPrint’s Kenny Miller calls a “tenant improvement project” for the building located on Wilshire Boulevard near Beverly Hills was certainly improved with the addition of the black-and-white wall murals.

Three of the murals focus on Los Angeles cityscapes, while another features a classic photo of Ben Hogan swinging away on a golf course (the client is an avid golfer). The trick in pre-press was creating consistency among the murals, which ThumbPrint did by adjusting the levels so that the blacks and grayscale matched as closely as possible, creating consistency from mural to mural and room to room.

ThumbPrint Custom Wall GraphicsThe images were printed on LexJet Pebble WallPro SUV 15 oz. by York with a Seiko ColorPainter M-64s low-solvent printer with 3M SX inks, and applied with wallpaper paste.

Two of the cityscapes were applied in conference rooms and measure 89″ x 134″. The image with the palm trees in the foreground were applied to a freestanding wall, covering 89″ x 110″, and wrapped about eight inches around either side of the wall. The Ben Hogan photo is 90″ x 130″ and is the office’s focal point.

“We ordered samples of a few different textures, and Pebble was what the client wanted. It was a good choice because it has a real nice look and feel to the print with some dimension to it, and I like the price point. When you look at it from different angles it gives you a bit of shimmer shine to it. It printed great, and the customer was really excited when we installed it,” says Miller. “The WallPro went down on the walls better than I anticipated. I just went to the wallpaper store and got rollers and adhesive paste. It took about three and a half hours to apply all of it. I mostly do adhesive vinyl, which goes up faster, but this has a nicer look to it and it doesn’t show the seams like vinyl does. I like the way the 15-oz. applied to the wall; there was never a time I was frustrated with it. It completely transforms an office space into something custom and a more inviting space.”

Vinyl Application Christmas Gift

Prints by Stephen Edward Graphics

Just in time for Christmas, Stephen Weber, owner of Stephen Edward Graphics, Brandon, Wis., treated himself to an early gift, a 56-inch wide Big Squeegee. Just in time, too, since he had some large (4×8) background panels to print for a Christmas play at a local church.

Big Squeegee Vinyl Application“I had never applied vinyl to something that big. Typically we use a hand squeegee. I started doing it with a hand squeegee and realized it wouldn’t work very well,” recalls Weber. “I found out about the Big Squeegee at an online forum. I ordered it, tried it and the first one worked flawlessly.”

Weber produced three large panel backdrops, printed on HP Permanent Adhesive Matte Vinyl with his new HP Latex 310 Printer from LexJet.

HP Latex 310 Printer“You roll the print up onto a roll. The squeegee sits behind the roll and you walk the squeegee down the board. It takes the backer off as you apply it and goes right along the board,” explains Weber. “It came out real smooth. You can also use it to apply laminates. I didn’t laminate these prints, but I’ve printed some car decals that I applied laminate to and it worked very well. Then you can take it to the cutter and contour-cut it.”
