When it comes to yard signs, there are a few tips to keep in mind in terms of what content to include, color and design and the proper material to print to. Here’s what you need to know, and some tips you can pass along to your customers:
Content: Keep content short and concise and use action verbs like “vote,” “elect” or “re-elect” for election signage. The candidate’s last name should be the largest thing on the signage. For yard signs, go with just the action verb, the last name and the office he or she is running for, like “mayor” or “city council.” On yard signs, stay away from photos and slogans that may distract from the key message of the sign (and aren’t included on the ballot). Name recognition is key here. You can use nicknames if they’re widely known throughout the community.
For banners, on the other hand, you have more room for photos and slogans to drive the message home. Your customer will want to check with local officials if a disclaimer, such as “this advertisement paid by …” is required. They’ll also want to ask about timing and placement of signs, as some communities have specific rules.
Color & Design: Red, white and blue are the standards during election cycles, but the candidate who breaks away from those may stand out in the crowd. Advise customers that everything in their campaign should use the same palette for a consistent look. Also, white words printed on dark backgrounds are always easier to read from a distance than black words on white backgrounds, or, worse case: colored words on colored backgrounds.
A typical reader passing or driving by will give your sign less than a second to register, so legibility is essential. Fonts should generally be san-serif and non-italicized.
