Whole Foods Takes a Fresh Approach on In-Store Signage

If you’re in the printing business, you likely go into a store like Whole Foods and notice the signage right away. Posters and banners and point-of-sale displays jump out at you for their crisp colors, clean design and effective placement.

Plotter_BannerFor Whole Foods’ South Region, that’s managed and designed by a four-person Metro Artist Team, the first of its kind for the company.

“We’re responsible for eight stores in Atlanta and two other south region stores, and we support the rest of the south region,” says Justin Kendall. “We handle a lot of the graphic design and the printing of banners, posters and additional marketing collateral. The stores change very frequently, so there’s constantly a stream of printing going on.”

LexJet brandUP: Larger-than-Life Journals for Williams Parker

williams parker posters2Considering that it is one of the longest-established law firms in Sarasota, it’s not surprising that Williams Parker, founded in 1925, would also be a leader in thought leadership across a variety of industries, as they relate to the legal profession.

The firm recently launched Requisite, an elegant and topical journal geared toward business owners, C-suite executives, successful entrepreneurs and more, written in straight-forward, accessible language. The journal focuses on the legal and practical aspects of topics such as charitable giving, real estate, philanthropy and tax audits, to name a few. The covers of the perfect-bound journals have a classic look with icon black-and-white photography and refined typography.

To showcase the first three editions of the journal, the LexJet brandUP crew worked with Williams Parker to blow the cover image up to poster size, which was then printed on LexJet 8 Mil Satin Polypropylene with PSA and adhered to gatorboard.

williams parker magazine“We plan to display the covers prominently in our office for all visitors and employees to see,” says Brad Robbins, COO of Williams Parker. “We hope to add to the collection as new editions of Requisite are published.”

The firm has published five editions of Requisite, the latest edition focusing on international issues such as tax issues, compliance and more. A few editions of the journal have discussed gift giving and philanthropic endeavors for businesses, a topic near and dear to the firm.

“In addition to helping form and launch many of the area’s iconic civic institutions, we have counseled many of the visionaries behind the area’s growth from the first portion of the 20th century,” Robbins says. “Today, our attorneys serve on the boards of dozens of civic organizations throughout Sarasota and Manatee counties. We also serve as general counsel to many entities. We contribute our time and intellectual capital to making the community a great place to live.”

Acrylic Signs by West Coast Signage
Customers really Like these super-colorful acrylic signs by West Coast Signage printed on LexJet TOUGHcoat Water-Resistant Polypropylene and applied to the back of the acrylic with an optically clear adhesive.

David Druckerman and Mark Lawrence have each been in the sign industry for more than 30 years. Old-timers, you might say, but using the new-fangled ways of doing things to get things done.

Banners by West Coast Signage
West Coast Signage has had great success with LexJet TOUGHcoat Blockout Scrim Banner, another customer favorite.

Case in point: social media, like Facebook and LinkedIn, which have been beneficial in more ways than just spreading the word.

About two years ago, the two long-time sign industry veterans partnered on a new venture, West Coast Signage, based in Woodland Hills, Calif. Since then, the company has seen steady growth and diversification.

“Whenever we do something nice that we’re proud of, we post it on Facebook, LinkedIn and sometimes Google+,” says Druckerman. “We think that keeping our social media updated has helped drive some business our way.”

Architectural Renderings by West Coast Signage
West Coast Signage prints posters and produces other signage for Lexus, such as this architectural rendering on LexJet TOUGHcoat Water-Resistant Polypropylene.

Liking Facebook, or more specifically, Liking LexJet’s new interactive catalog, brought a $500 LexJet Gift Card to West Coast Signage: they Liked and were drawn as the winner of the Facebook promotion.

West Coast Signage’s specialty is architectural signage, but the company recently added wide-format printing to the mix with a Canon iPF8400 from LexJet.

“LexJet had an incredible deal on the Canon, which we’re very pleased with. We were jobbing a lot of stuff out, like banners. We didn’t have the ability to do even a temporary banner, so the Canon printer has helped out a lot,” says Druckerman. “Dave Mayer, who takes care of us at LexJet, has been wonderful in helping us find the right product for whatever project we’re working on.”

Trade Show Prints by West Coast Signage
West Coast Signage has diversified its product offering with wide-format printing, including stellar trade show graphics.

Adding wide-format inkjet printing has allowed West Coast Signage to expand into more promotional and interior applications, like posters and trade show graphics. Druckerman says that LexJet TOUGHcoat Water-Resistant Polypropylene has been a versatile, multi-application material.

“We use the polypropylene and an optically-clear adhesive to make full-color, second-surface acrylic signs. It’s been a popular product for interior signage, whether it’s some type of promotional graphic or a photograph,” says Druckerman.

Finding a Competitive Advantage for Poster Printing

Poster Printing
Productive Displays, Addison, Ill., was able to print high-quality posters cost-effectively with Sunset Photo Satin SUV.

There are certain volumes for poster printing where digital inkjet printing simply can’t compete with offset or screen printing. However, those volume numbers, and the margin where such projects are profitable, inch higher for digital printing companies as time goes by.

Inkjet Poster PrintingBruce Ulrich, president of Productive Displays in Addison, Ill., reports that with the addition of LexJet Sunset Photo Satin SUV 275g, that volume number where his company can compete for poster jobs with offset and screen printing is near 1,000.

“Typically, where we compete most effectively for this type of work is in the 1-800 piece range. Once we go over 1,000 pieces I would need another 20-30 percent off the cost,” says Ulrich. “We used another product in the past, but it was much more expensive. I needed to find an option that would give us at least another 40-50 percent off the cost of producing posters.”

Ulrich found that option with LexJet with Sunset Photo Satin SUV 275g. Moreover, Productive Displays is able to provide a higher-quality, sharper and more color-accurate poster. Sunset Photo Satin SUV is also instant-dry, so that production of multiple-run posters can move quickly and smoothly using the company’s Mimaki JV3 solvent printers.

Inkjet Poster PrintingThe job pictured here for Dish Network is an excellent example as it required three versions with 100 prints of each version. Variable-data print projects, where there are multiple versions of the same print, continues to become more commonplace, fitting nicely into a wide-format digital print company’s wheelhouse.

“With most customers, they’ll come back and ask me for the price for three versions, five versions or ten versions. When they say that to the offset or screen print companies there’s a setup charge. I try to explain to them that where our favorable cost situation comes into play is that it doesn’t matter how many versions they want, the price per poster won’t change,” explains Ulrich. “The client was very pleased with the look and quality of the posters. The Sunset product will allow us to compete more cost-effectively against the offset and screen print companies for poster-related projects.”
