Intro to Décor Printing: You Already Have What You Need to Begin

Today, we’re kicking off a blog series on how on-demand printers and anyone offering wide-format printing services can jump into an exciting new market within the industry: Décor printing.

Chances are you’ve heard about the booming customizable décor printing opportunities in our industry. With the advances in substrates and printer technology, offering your customers more ways to create one-of-a-kind projects for residential or commercial spaces has become more accessible than ever.

It’s also likely your customers are starting to make requests for projects like wall murals, canvas wraps, floor graphics, customized window screens and even lampshades. In other words, if you can print it, they can decorate with it!

The Art of the Exhibit: Using Fabrics to Bring a Legend to Life

When the Orange County Regional History Center was tasked with producing an exhibit showcasing the work of sculptor Albin Polasek, exhibit lead Paul Trembly took on the challenge as an opportunity to experiment with new materials.

IMG_0163The Orlando, Fla.-based center had recently purchased an HP Latex 360 printer from LexJet, and for this project, Trembly was going for a softer look for the seven 4-foot-by-8-foot banners he had planned.

“We decided on the latex printer because it opened up a wider range of substrates for us to work with,” Trembly says when he needed to replace his aging HP DesignJet printer. “You don’t purchase a printer more than every 10 years, and long-term, we knew we’d be better off with being able to print varying types of substrates. It was pretty much a no-brainer.”

No Dye-Sub? No Problem. You Can Still Print Great Fabrics

There’s no doubt about it: Printed fabrics are in demand right now. And with the textile market seeing a 75% increase in the soft signage category, print service providers need to offer fabric as an alternative substrate, or their customers may just walk on by.

One major misconception is that printers need dye-sublimation technology to print fabrics correctly. But with the advancements in media options and printer technology, that’s certainly no longer the case. And in some instances, inkjet-printed fabrics are an even better option than dye-sub.
